Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Botany Bay II on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 1.00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Northwood Town II produced their best display of the season to beat promotion chasers Botany Bay II by 7 wickets after a rain affected game at Chestnut Avenue. Skipper Adam Hills won the toss and asked the opposition to bat on what looked a sticky wicket following the rain during the week.

Hills stressed the importance of using the new ball and both he and fellow strike bowler Mo Abbasi struck early on to put the visitors in trouble. That brought to the crease Bay's dangerous pair Mitra and Banerjee. They looked to stabilise the innings and whilst they played some lovely shots, chances still came but dropped catches looked like they could come back to haunt Town. But the introduction of the king of swing, Jack Daly swung the tie back in Town's favour. Daly produced a cracking spell of bowling either side of a 40 minute rain break to remove Banerjee for 26 and the Bay middle order. Daly finished with 3/28 off 12 superb overs. With Bay now batting for a revised 47 overs, the tail wagged to see them to a competitive total of 166/9.

Another brief shower further reduced Town's allocation of overs to 38 and they were dealt a blow when Neil Dudley was given out leg before for just 2. Akshay Loomba and Shaun O'Neill set about building a partnership against some good bowling from the visiting openers. The pair rotated the strike well and kept the score ticking over with some excellent running between the wickets. When O'Neill departed for a well-fought 30, Town were on 62 with 20 overs remaining.

Loomba was joined by skipper Hills - fresh from his maiden ton the previous week. Hills nearly fell early when he mistimed a leg-glance but the ball looped into safety. Loomba looked in great nick and pounced on any wayward bowling as Town scented victory. Loomba departed for 36 in the 27th over when his attempted cut shot picked out backward point but Hills and new batsman Rukshan Senanayaka continued to score regularly. It was fitting that the skipper crashed the winning runs in the 35th over to finish with a score of 67 not out (14x4).

Skipper Hills commented after the game: "This was our most complete performance of the season. We have proved we can bat and we can bowl. But very rarely have we managed to put the two together. We bowled well and used the conditions to our advantage and Jack Daly was superb with the ball. Shaun O'Neill and Akshay Loomba's partnership was absolutely vital and I was pleased to continue from where I left off last week. But this was a superb team effort. I am well pleased".

Town have now lost just once in five games and whilst they are still a fair way adrift of safety, they can go into their final four games with some confidence and just a chance of pulling off an amazing escape act.
