Bourne End v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 2.30pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 114 runs
Match report
Northwood Town re-wrote its history books this weekend by fielding a third Saturday team for the first time in 15 years. With as many as 6 members of the team playing their first Saturday game of the season for Town and with an average age of 23* (* = excluding outliers), the boys did themselves proud.
Town lost the toss and were put in to field, a decision which Bourne End’s captain must have questioned an hour into the game, with his team reduced to 24 for 5 after 14 overs. To achieve this, the new ball bowling partnership of Shahmeer Syed and Taz Katira bowled with consistent accuracy, but equally they were backed up by some very good ground fielding, catching and vocal support from the rest of the team. The duo, between them, ended up with match figures of 19-4-69-7.
However, following an extended initial spell of concentration, Town lost discipline for a while, as as many as 5 catches and a run out opportunity were missed and Bourne’s End recovered to a position of 114 for 6. Sattar (70, dropped off Connor O’Neill and Viraj Manek) and Sajid (43, dropped behind the stumps off consecutive deliveries of Taz Katira) particularly made Town pay for its mistakes.
However, the ground fielding and bowling remained strong. Ravi Kotecha particularly impressed in the field with both his ground fielding and catching, while Viraj Manek bowled with both speed and accuracy. A special mention also to Rao Ginasetti, who took upon himself the role of wicketkeeper-batsman, and while he may grow into this role over time for the Thirds, initial signs were positive including a smart catch down the legside off the bowling of Syed.
Chasing a target of 178, Town’s innings got off to a nightmare start, aided by some accurate bowling by Sajid and Scillitoes and a pitch which was fast deteriorating into a dustbowl. Less than an hour in, Town found themselves at 13 for 6 after 10 overs.
However, the lower order restored some pride, led by a 34 run-partnership between Ravi Kotecha and Taz Katira, both of whom took time to understand the wicket before hitting six 4s between them. Kotecha cleverly used the pace of Israr to score his runs square of, and behind the wicket, while Katira preferred to finesse the offspin of Pitts to the leg side boundary.
Even after both departed, Viraj Manek, Connor O’Neill and Shahmeer Syed all showed very good defensive techniques (until Syed switched his Boycott hat for an Afridi hat – presumably in anticipation of Abdul Firfire’s now well-renowned chicken burgers), as Town’s innings ended a mere 8 overs shy of a draw.
Overall a good day out for many who were playing their first game this season for Town, with plenty of positives to be taken. Most of all the team spirit was excellent and there were already signs that the players were growing into their newly formed roles.
