Ruislip Victoria II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 1.30pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 62 runs

Match report Northwood Town CC III registered their first win of the season by a large margin of 62 runs, only four games after being re-found after a decade and a half of dormancy.

The day started on a positive note, with Town III’s players turning up to their home ground early for some pre-match training. Things continued to be positive as Town won the toss on the away pitch and decided to bat first.

Rajul Patel at the top of the order began with a solid knock of 17 and his uncharacteristically aggressive batting set the tone for the rest of the day. Of particular note was Abdul Firfire’s knock of 40. Firfire anchored the inning to perfection, batting with style, and towards the latter part of his innings, pure determination and application. He was ably supported by patient knocks from Ravi Kotecha and Shahmeer Syed, who between them ensured that Town batted out their allotted 40 overs. Town’s total was also aided by some aggressive batting down the order by Prakash Tailor and debutant Vipul Patel. At tea, Town left the opposition 180 to chase in their 40 overs at exactly 4.5 runs an over.

As the opposition’s innings began, Town’s bowlers showed immense discipline for the third time in four games, and this time, the result was the best of the lot. 8 overs in, the opposition had been reduced to 14 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Leading the way, was Town’s Shahmeer Syed, who bowled with nagging accuracy and swing and ended with match figures of 6-4-7-4. He was aptly supported by skipper Taz Katira and Conor O’Neill, both of whom picked up two wickets apiece – the latter even uprooting one of the opposition batsmen’s stumps by his pace. Also heartening was to see Town’s fielding effort as all “full” chances were taken. Particularly impressive were a sharp catch by Ravi Kotecha at short cover off Syed and an impressive direct-hit run out by Conor O’Neill to break a key lower-order partnership.

The opposition was bowled out for 127, as Town closed victory with an impressive margin of 62 runs. There were plenty of positives to be taken from the game, including the large step up in the application and individual responsibility shown by Town’s batsmen, bowlers and fielders.

On a day which yielded so many positives, Town’s arrival at the opposition’s clubhouse was welcomed with “brief entertainment” (what pun?), before Town headed back to their own clubhouse for a comparatively more sedate celebration over a few beers and cokes. Excellent play, Town!
