Southill Park v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 61 runs

Match report At a ground voted one of the 12 most beautiful in the country, and on the estate of the famous Whitbread brewing family, Town lost the toss and were put into field.

With rain making the ball difficult to grip, the opening bowling partnership of Conor O’Neill and Meeth Katira struggled to make early inroads into the opposition’s batting line-up, as,12 overs into the game, Southhill Park CC, reached a score of 98 for the loss of just one wicket.

The introduction of skipper Taz Katira into the attack led to a dramatic turnaround, and the opposition was soon reduced, from a position of relative ease, to a score of 107 for 7. Bowling a mixture of disciplined medium pace against the right-handers, and dipping offspinners against the left-handers, Taz picked up Town III’s first five-wicket haul of the season.

After Taz also completed a jammy run-out off his own bowling, Sumeet Khetia decided to spoil Taz’s party by picking up his first wicket for the IIIs during a disciplined spell of medium pace and leg spinners. A partnership of 69 ensued for the eighth wicket, due to a mix of inconsistent bowling by Town’s back-up bowlers but also brilliant application by the opposition.

Dileep Soory finally ended a strong resistance by bowling out Crawford, and Conor O’Neill got rid of numbers 10 and 11 in his come-back over at the death, leaving Town a total of 190 to chase in their allotted 40 overs.

Losing both openers early, Sumeet Khetia and Abdul Firfire found themselves in a position of battling a combination of disciplined fielding and an ever-increasing required run-rate. 11 overs in, Town found themselves at 19 for 3, facing a strong uphill task from there-on-in. Khetia (32) dropped anchor well, but struggled to find an aggressive partner at the other end to keep Town up to the required run rate.

Havan Patel (38) and Vipul Patel (22) batted extremely well in the latter half of the inning to turn the situation around and give Town a sniff of victory. With 9 overs left, Town were still looking at a reasonable just-over-7-an-over. Havan Patel in particular showed maturity well beyond his years, in an innings which was a clever combination of both attack and defence.

Two tight overs later, Havan fell to the pressure of an increasing run-rate, and Town were bowled out soon after, 61 runs short of the target.
