Ampthill Town II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2011 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost By 3 Wickets

Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN faced up to their worst week of the season in terms of availability, but despite a three wicket defeat showed great character to pick up 17 points in a gutsy display.

Losing the toss, Town were asked to bat first and began well with Naresh Kumar scoring 24. The dismissal of Kumar saw Jim Cotton (16) and skipper Michael Lister come together at the crease and they were to forge a solid third wicket partnership of 44. Cotton's dismissal was soon followed by the out of sorts Scott Walker and at 89-4, the visitors needed to show some backbone. Michael Lister, skipper for the day in David Bushnell's absence, was leading by example and he was joined by Shaun O'Neill who stepped forward to back his partner in fine style. The pair put on 96 in a fantastic fifth wicket partnership to put the home side firmly on the back foot. O'Neill produced a mature 44 whilst Lister was showing terrific form.
However, the dismissal of O'Neill on 185 led to a capitulation of Northwood Town proportions. Lister soon followed, agonsingly four runs short of his century, following a superb display of batting, including 14 fours and two sixes. Nevertheless he deserved to be backed by the rest of the team who were unable to even bat the overs out. From an outstanding platform, the visitors
somehow managed to lose their final five wickets for just 22 runs and Town were dismissed for an ultimately disappointing 207.

Town were missing opening bowlers Bushnell and Richard Doling and playing on an excellent track the task of defending just over 200 looked daunting. However, the team were determined and made vital early breakthroughs as the hosts fell to 6-2 and 55-4. Dom Whyley in particular was showing great form and he was to take 3-32 off nine overs. Neal Furmenger, making more comebacks that Sinatra himself, toiled away as usual and took one wicket whilst keeping a tight line.
Young Connor O'Neill showed his potenial with 2-66, whilst Naresh Kumar took three superb catches.
At 143-6, Town felt they had a real chance, but the hosts knuckled down to ensure they got home with just one more loss.
Despite a promising performance, the lack of depth had ultimately cost Town victory, but they were pleased to come home with 17 points and some promising signs.
Skipper Lister was upbeat inspite of defeat:
"Given our availability issues it was a very pleasing effort. Really we should have batted the overs out and then I think we would have had every chance to pull off an unlikely victory. Shaun O'Neill with the bat and Dom Whyley with the ball were particularly impressive. Hopefully this creates a good base to build the rest of the season on."
