Broxbourne III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won 18 runs
Match report
Having won the toss Town elected to bat first on a bright sunny day on a flat wicket housed in the idyllic surrounds at Broxbourne.
Openers Robbins and Ramawat quickly vindicated this decision and went about the Broxbourne attack with some positive stroke play and a raft of boundaries to put on 69 for the opening partnership. After the tumble of a couple of quick wickets, it was then the turn of the excellent Andy Burt and the ever-reliable Pradip Pandey to build upon the platform already set. With great technique, guile and at times sheer guts and determination AB [Burt] soon posted the first half-century for the Town 2’s this season and with Pandey ably supporting at the other end for his 37, the pair raced to a partnership of 96.
With Pandey gone, AB then steered the Town ship along with the tail towards a score well over the 200 score required on this pitch. AB finally succumbed to an inviting delivery and was caught in the deep for 79, his knock applauded from his teammates and opposition alike. Soon after the Town innings came to a close on 231, a total in which skipper Cheesewright felt that might have been 20 runs too short.
With the skippers tea-time words still ringing in their ears the Town opening bowlers of Furmenger and Manek announced themselves with style. Furmenger castled the Broxbourne opening bat’s stumps on the very first ball of the innings and with Manek bowling some tricky deliveries, Broxbourne were soon struggling on 36-4.
With Bobby Graham joining the party with a well crafted wicket and the robotic Furmenger bowling line and length time after time, Broxbourne were wobbling at 90-6 and Furmenger had bagged his 4th wicket. Time to mention the very capable Richard Robbins behind the stumps with some fine glove work and 2 very sharp catches.
Victory almost seemed certain for the Town. Alas, this was not going to be straight forward and Broxbourne were not going to lie down that easily. With a 7th wicket partnership of over 100, the Town fielders started to feel the nerves with 3 crucial sharp catches going to ground.
Enter Nishal Mapara. The feisty Town newbie was to open his account with aplomb.
Bowling some tight lines and pacey deliveries Broxbourne were running out of overs and the game looked destined for a draw. With Furmenger coming back into the attack in support and in a quest for his 5th victim, he bagged the crucial 7th wicket aided with a fine catch by Burt. With the 8th wicket gone soon after, the game turned on its head - the equation then simple. 2 wickets in the last over needed for a Town win. Surely not?
Surely, yes! Mapara stepped up to show how to bowl at the death and the Broxbourne tail where quickly to hear that dreaded death rattle….twice! 2 wickets gone. Broxbourne all out. Cue ecstatic scenes as the Town freed the frustration from the previous weeks heart braking results.
A victory snatched from the jaws of a draw! Mapara, Furmenger and Burt the heroes and 30 points to boot.
The skipper could not be more proud of his team.
