Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Sawbridgeworth II on Sat 16 Jun 2012 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won By 7 wickets

Match report Town’s first XI won for the first time this season at home to Sawbridgeworth on Saturday. The town side included a couple of changes with Robbins and Vadgama joining the side with Lister and Cotton giving way. Town lost the toss and were asked to bat first against a side who were very confident after managing to defend 80 the previous week.

Although there had been significant rain during the week the pitch looked like the normal Town wicket where if you got in you would be able to get some runs. The weather however was determined to make it as difficult as possible for the fielding side as the cold and very windy conditions would have made it very difficult for all bowlers.

Doling and Bushnell opened the bowling and both grabbed an early wicket as the Sawbridgeworth openers sought to play some attacking shots. Then began a spell of immense luck for the Sawbridgeworth who could not handle Doling’s nagging accuracy, but seemed to be able to lob the ball up to every area on the field where a fielder was not standing. This frustrating stand was bought to an end with a direct hit from deep as Robbins ran out Bird. At this point Doling had changed ends following a brave decision from the skipper and it was a gamble that paid off. Doling allowed the opposition batsmen no time to settle and began to take regular wickets backed up by some solid fielding to finish with figures of 6-38 off 24.4 overs.

Another run out this time a great throw from Loomba saw the Sawbridgeworth top scorer Purnell (45) out and the tail quickly folded with Town needing 125 to win.

Following recent batting issues, Town had a little nervousness about chasing down the relatively low target, but they should not have been concerned, after the early loss of Robbins (4), Walker joined Ahluwalia (28) and looked solid as they took Town towards the total. The stand set Town up for the win and frustrated the Sawbridgeworth team, especially opening bowler Howard who can only be described as a little angry…

Howard did grab the second wicket of the innings when he trapped Ahluwalia LBW, but Carter (20) welcomed himself to the wicket with an massive 6 over mid on early on. With the weather seeming to get even worse and rain threatening both batsmen looked to push on, and Walker having played himself into some form took himself to 50 with a massive 6 which resulted in a lost ball.

Town then comfortably saw themselves home with the loss of one further wicket with Walker finishing on 64 not out. A much deserved win set up by some great bowling from Doling and finishing from Walker. Next week’s game is against 2nd in the table Potton Town, but with the confidence gained from the season’s first win Town will feel they have a good chance.
