Bovingdon v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 05 May 2012 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 7 runs

Match report Northwood Town's 2nd XI did something that they had not done since the 2006 season by winning their opening game of the season. They were one of only two games in Division 9 to beat the weather as they travelled to fancied Bovingdon.

Ravi Ramawat's tenure at captain did not get off to a good start as he lost the toss and his team were asked to bat on a very green wicket. Kunal Sanghi and Richard Robbins were given the task of seeing off the new ball against Bovvy's opening attack of Jack Bryson and Andy Woodward, who between them - picked up 70 odd league wickets in 2011. Scoring was at a premium but it was not until the 12th over that the hosts made a breakthrough when Robbins somewhat unfortunately dragged on to a ball that kicked up. It opened the floodgates as Town's top order crumbled and they suddenly found themselves 26/4.

Suvin Mekwan provided some brief fireworks as he decided that attack was the best option but he too was out as wickets continued to tumble. It was an excellent 7th wicket partnership between skipper Ramawat and Pradip Pandey that gave Town something to bowl at as the pair showed great patience to stick around and grind out runs. Ramawat batted for the best part of 30 overs to score 47 before he was, somewhat controversially given out leg before. Pandey also fell shortly after for a crucial 15. The tail was unable to get Town into the battings points and they collapsed again from 107/6 to 119 all out.

In reply, Town struck early when debutant Sajid Malik removed Buttleman in his first over. But Town were sloppy in the field and no fewer than three good chances went down in the first 10 overs. The usually robotic Neal Furmenger struggled to find a rhythm but removed Arnold but the thorn in Town's side proved to be powerful left-hander Jack Blackburn. After being given two lives by the Town field he plundered any wayward bowling and at 68/3, victory for Bovvy looked assured.

However it was the introduction of Suvin Mekwan and Akshay Loomba that turned the game for Town as they produced a devastating spell of bowling. Still though Blackburn was gnawing away at the total and the hosts needed just 18 runs with 5 wickets left. However, with the skies darkening Town took quick wickets to get into the Bovingdon tail. Mekwan then took the crucial wicket of Blackburn with a peach of an off-spinner and the final pair were soon sent packing with Loomba holding on to a caught and bowled to spark the celebrations for Town.

A cracking start for Town who really fought back after staring down the barrel of defeat. Ramawat lead the way with a defiant innings while Mekwan and Loomba were the stars with the ball. Plenty of positives to take but also plenty of room for improvement.

Well done lads!
