Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Old Owens II on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
NORTHWOOD TOWN 2ND X1 186 OLD OWENS 187-7
Northwood Town’s 2nd XI missed out on their 4th win of the season despite a late bowling fight back gaining some respectability and vital points, following some loose early bowling and lacklustre fielding display.
Following the last two weeks of Skipper Ravi Ramawat winning the toss, luck ran out and Town were asked to bat first in a pitch that was giving some help to the bowlers. As a result Town started cautiously, and despite losing both openers relatively cheaply Ravi (30) and Andy Burt (47) built a solid third wicket partnership of 52, to push Town to a respectable total after 30 overs.
Following Ravi’s dismissal Rich Robbins joined Andy Burt in the middle, and visibly sought to up the scoring rate with some opportunistic running between the wickets and the odd impressive shot. With the loss of Burt, Town saw a batting collapse as young opening bowler Clark returned to the attack and 4 wickets fell for just 6 runs. A brief cameo from Sajid Malik (21) hitting some lofty shots over mid on pushed Town up to 186, with Robbins falling in the last over for a respectable 43.
Having posted 186 Town had reason to feel confident as they have been able to bowl teams out successfully three times this year. However, the openers for Old Owens had different ideas as Captain Lane punished the first ball of the innings with a searing 4 over extra cover. The continued to attack through the early overs and the Town bowlers continued to give away at least one 4 ball an over which were punished. Town were confident that with the attacking mindset a chance would come and Viraj managed to induce a drive from Lane when he was on just 10 which was dropped at mid off.
Following a great catch from Kunal standing up from Furmenger Lane was joined by his son, who had the same outlook as his dad and plundered 37 runs with a mix of some great shots and a couple of lofty slogs. A change of pace up the hill saw Sachin Dave come on, and despite going for some big hits, Dave stuck to his line and got the wicket of Lane Junior with an easy catch from Town’s newest safe pair of hands Pradip Pandey.
At this point Old Owens were coasting towards a victory, but a sharp piece of fielding from Kunal to run out Owen’s number 4 Zeshan (18) seemed to reinvigorate the town attack who went in search of some additional bowling points. Bobby Graham (2-3) came on up the hill and Furmenger (3-54) was swapped ends from his earlier spell and Town grabbed 4 quick wickets to take our losing point’s hall to a respectable 15.
In reflection, gaining 15 points against a strong Old Owens side was vital in maintaining our promotion push. However, all of the team felt they have something to learn and improve on for next weeks fixture at Parkfield and Headstone
