Greenwood Park v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 28 Jul 2012 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Northwood Town 2nd XI moved back into the promotion places with a stunning run chase at fellow promotion hunters Greenwood Park. Andy Burt was once again the hero for Town as his superb 65* saw Town home with 9 balls to spare.
Town started the day 9 points behind their Chiswell Green opponents and could not afford to lose further ground. After the week of glorious sun, Town were greeted by a beautiful flat deck. When skipper Ravi Ramawat lost the toss, it was not a shock when Town were asked to field. Viraj Manek and Adam Hills took the new ball and Hills struck early when Gloudemans played on to his stumps. Hills thought he had then removed Baker with a peach of a delivery that took out off stump but the umpire had a front foot no ball. Shahmir Syed did remove Baker shortly after and then Hills took an excellent catch in the covers to remove the dangerous looking Arora. Chris Kent was the anchor in the Greenwood Park innings and he batted patiently for a decent 62 but Hills, who returned impressive figures of 3-43 off 18 overs - and the spin duo of Suvin Mekwan and Bobby Graham kept the run rate low. Wickets continued to tumble in the latter stages and Syed and Manek returned and Town restricted the hosts to 199/8 off their 53 overs. At tea, Town felt confident that they could chase down what seemed a below par score.
Starting with the old ball, Greenwood Park put Town under immense early pressure and they were rewarded with the big wicket of Jim Cotton who edged behind. Suvin Mekwan was next to go with the score on 30 as he missed a straight one and was bowled for 18. That brought Andy Burt to the crease but wickets at the other end continued to fall with Ramawat and Richard Robbins bowled throwing their wickets away to horrid shots. At 45/4, things didn't look good for Town but they have serious depth to their batting line up and Kunal Sanghi, trying a new position at #6 joined Burt at the crease in the 15th over. The pair grafted hard and refused to give their wickets away. They ran well, they put away the bad ball and the score continued to tick.
Another problem now facing Town's batsman was the sun that was starting to set directly in the batsman's eyes from the pavilion end. At drinks Town were 104/4 and suddenly their was a hint of victory. The fourth wicket partnership was crucial for Town as Burt and Sanghi pounced on anything slightly wide. Burt brought up his 50 with a beautiful straight drive before Sanghi was caught at mid-on for 46. The pair put on 113 and with the score on 158/5, Town required 42 from 39 balls. Ravi Kotecha fell cheaply and the game was very much in the balance.
Adam Hills joined Burt at the crease for the partnership that was to see Town over the line. The pair ran superbly between the wickets and when Hills smashed Shetty back over his head the writing was on the wall. Hills (19*) and Burt (65*) secured the 30 points for Town with 9 balls remaining for what was essentially a stunning run chase. Town had worked tirelessly in the field to keep the total under 200 and then Burt and Sanghi provided the foundations of a brilliant innings with a superb partnership.
Town had six games remaining this season and are currently in the driving seat. They will look at their remaining fixtures with respect but confident they can put a run together that should give them an excellent chance of returning to Division 8 next season.
