Reed v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report NORTHWOOD TOWN suffered another defeat following yet another flakey batting performance, leaving them in desperate trouble at the wrong end of Division Two. Winning the toss, Raj Ahluwalia elected to bat. Johanes Van Ee started with his usual gung-ho approach but was soon cleared up and fellow opener Phil Costard knuckled down with Rohan Lee to try and build an innings. The pair put on 40 before Lee was bowled out and it was then left to Phil Costard to take responsibility. He put on a fluent performance with some tremendous shots but the dismissal of Brendan Heaney at the other end was to lead to a collapse of epic proportions. From 70-2, the visitors fell to 80-7 with few of the middle order showing any backbone. Skipper Ahluwalia, batting at eight due to illness, dug deep with Dominic Whyley to try and salvage some sort of score. Whyley showed his fellow players how to battle and played an excellent supporting role as the pair frustrated the hosts, batting for 24 overs together. Whilst the runs were scarce, the pair had at least managed to restore some respectability with Ahluwalia scoring 28. Ishmeet Singh came in at eleven to hit a couple of boundaries and finish unbeaten on 11, but Town were still dismissed for a somewhat meagre 134.

In reply the visitors were determined to make it hard for the hosts and again showed a fighting spirit that belied their poor batting performance. Richard Doling picked up three wickets and Dave Bushnell one as Reed stuttered to 60-4. However, despite a strong bowling and fielding performance the hosts were entitled to take a cautious approach. Van Ee and Whyley snared a wicket each but Reed were now comfortable and eased home for the loss of six wickets in 44 overs.

Ahluwalia knew again what had let the side down:
"It was a game for two good bowling sides but only a few of us showed any sort of battling qualities with the bat and once again we just did not give ourselves a decent total to defend. The middle order are struggling for any sort of form and that is where we really need to improve."
