Northwood Town Cricket Club Won By 56 Runs

Match report Debutants Shine in Winning Start for Northwood Town

Excellent performances from Town new boys Sangeet Patel (50) and Geet Patel (3 for 10), and a superb knock of 71 from veteran opener Raj Ahluwalia were the difference for Northwood Town's 1st XI as they kickstarted their season with an excellent win at home to Boxmoor.

Unlike many April friendlies in recent history, this game went ahead in glorious sunshine and new Club Captain Michael Lister won the toss and opted to bat on a predictably slow early season wicket. Town got off to a rocky start, losing three of the top order cheaply. However, exciting new batsman Sangeet Patel joined Ahluwalia in the middle to forge an exceptional 99 partnership.

After a sensible and watchful start, the pair sent the run rate soaring with a flurry of boundaries as they both reached their half centuries to put Town in a commanding position. Shahmeer Syed (22) unleashed some fine shots towards the end to maintain the momentum and push the team towards an intimidating total of 198 off 45 overs.

Equally positive with the ball, Town's bowlers never let the batsman settle. Mitesh Parmar in particular showed great control and skill at the outset to return economical figures of 0-14 off 9 overs. While Parmar applied the pressure at one end, the wickets tumbled at the other, with Geet Patel putting in an outstanding debut performance with 3 wickets for just 10 runs from 6 overs of clever leg spin, to ensure he was not outshone by his brother on debut.

A significant partnership between Madusanka (52) and former Town stalwart Adam HILLS (22, before falling to Jonathan Bentvelzen's mystery spin) brought Boxmoor within reach. However, Town's bowlers were to have the final say with Syed and Lister chipping in with 2 wickets apiece to round off the Boxmoor innings and clinch a first win of the season for a rejuvenated Northwood Town side.

Reflecting on the win, Captain Michael Lister commented: "It's pleasing to start with a win and the spirit and attitude of all the players was exemplary today. We're in a positive frame of mind and delivered a very good performance today. However, we have to keep in mind that this was a friendly match and the main objective is to sharpen our skills during these matches to ensure we are ready to hit the ground running on 4th May when the league season starts".
