Match report It was clear from the outset that the rain would play a big part in the outcome of this fixture away to Old Camdenians II.

Losing the all-important toss, Town were put into bat first. With rain delaying the start openers Firfire and Mekwan set about their task with some considered batting, Mekwan punctuating the raft of singles with a crashing a six. With the tight bowling and variable bounce on the damp strip, it was the introduction of Salman Rizvi that brought some fresh impetus to the innings. Playing in his first competitive game of cricket since the halcyon days of the Northwood Town Colts section of the early 00’s, Rizvi quickly set about driving some impressive boundaries and along with Firfire, a stout partnership was beginning to develop.

Alas, down came the rain. After a frustrating break the new, revised over total of 36 meant that the thought process had to change and quick runs were now the name of the game. With Firfire & Rizvi succumbing on 25 & 27 respectively, a quick fire 17 from Krunal Patel and some spritely running in between the wickets from veteran Dave Harding meant that a respectable total was to fall in vain as the Town forged a minor collapse to end on 119 all out.

After some ‘cordial’ discussions at the tea interval with the opposition as to the revised amount of overs remaining in the game, the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ prevailed and Old Camdenians set about the chase off of 32 overs.

The ‘Spirit’ was certainly in full flow as the Town field was as vocal as ever. Unfortunately with the small total and Old Camdenians taking advantage of the improved conditions, the early breakthrough that was required arrived late. Furmenger & Mekwan grabbed a wicket apiece, but it was the steady flow of runs and extras that quickly moved the oppo’s score onwards. With Shahmeer Syed taking the 3rd wicket of the batsmen that refused to walk to a clear nick earlier on in the innings, the target was then reached shortly after. 120 -3.

Town Skipper, Neil Cheesewright was philosophical at the end of the match.
“We were always up against it batting first. Hopefully there will not be too many occasions throughout the season where the weather plays such an influence. The spirit was good given the circumstances, we just need to make sure our application remains at it’s highest at all times.”
