Bushey II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 06 Jul 2013 at 1 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
A tense finish for Town, but victory at last!
Losing the toss Town where invited to bowl first on a deck that appeared to offer all of the elements for a high scoring affair. This was not the case. Opening the bowling, the veteran Furmenger struck in the first over, unleashing a deadly accurate delivery that kept low with the opening Bushey bat offering no real defense.
The pattern was to follow as Bushey wickets tumbled. Soon Furmenger had bagged 4 and with the very able and hugely reliable Krunal Patel bowling balls from his bag of tricks at the other end, Bushey were soon 56-6.
A short rally from Bushey ensued with the 7th wicket partnership moving the score through to the 90’s. However Town stayed dogged in the field and Krunal Patel was bowling with real assurance. Then came the champagne moment. With the dangerous Varma clipping the ball off his legs to midwicket, there was Phil Carter. Rolling back the years and with a dive to his right like a leaping salmon, Carter took the most magnificent of catches! Town where back in the ascendancy.
Patel soon had 4 wickets and with the determined Raj Kotecha joining the party with 2 wickets at the death, Bushey were skittled for 130. With all catching opportunities going to hand, the fielding display provided much encouragement for the town skipper.
Fresh from their magnificent opening display from the previous week, it was Thakrar and Mekwan to begin the chase to the mediocre total. A repeat performance? Alas no. Bowling with the old ball, Bushey began with spin resulting in 3 quick wickets as Mekwan, Thakrar and Patel all went cheaply. Town were wobbling at 12-3.
Enter Ramawat and Carter to the fray. With real assurance and batting application the pair grasped the intense situation by the scruff of the neck and set about the buoyant Bushey bowling attack to all parts of the ground - Carter as strong as ever on the leg side and Ramawat competently sweeping all before him. The score rallied to 84-3.
A bowling change then presented a breakthrough as Ramawat was caught behind and Carter given out to a dubious LBW. Adaita and Pandey soon followed them back to the Pavilion without troubling the score and when Cheesewright was run out taking a suicidal run to an over throw, the target of 131 quickly looked in doubt.
Arise the heroes of the hour. In Raj Kotecha and the evergreen Dave Harding, these Town stalwarts steadied the rocking boat with calm assurance. The left hand, right hand combination rotated the strike with great skill, dispatching the bad balls and giving no quarter. Single followed 4, followed single.
With an incredibly nervous gallery watching on, the scores were then tied at 130 apiece. Could this be the 2’s first victory?
With a bye, the answer was an emphatic YES! The target reached. Kotecha not out on 18, the silver fox Harding not out on 6. Furmenger in at 11 breathed a sigh of relief, as did the skipper Cheesewright.
Cue delirious celebration from the boundary. Town had their first victory of the season in the bag. Hard fought but very well deserved.
