Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Mill Hill Village on Sat 07 Sep 2013 at 12.30
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Back to back tons by town 2's talisman Burt, takes 2's to mid table respectability.
After losing the toss, Town where invited to bat first on an overcast day that had already seen a light shower of rain prior to the start.
Wickets fell at regular intervals within the first 20 overs with only Krunal Patel troubling the fairly safe bowling of Mill Hill. At 85-5 the large total required to set the league leaders in a game they had to win, seemed a long way away.
Fresh from his sublime 120 not out in the previous match, it was the maestro Andy Burt that really stole the show and ignite the town innings. With calm assurance and an almost nonchalant style, burt dispatched the Mill Hill bowling to all parts of the ground. Ably assisted with some steady partnerships from Raj Kotecha (28, 49 partnership) and then Abdul Firfire (13, 73 partnership), Burt struck his 2nd, successive century with a prod to mid wicket. Cue the universal ovation from both sets of players, followed by the requisite NTCC badge kiss. A very proud moment.
Burt fell soon after in an attempt to move the score along. His innings of 102 returned 10 fours and 1 six. Well done that man. With overs running out - aggressive, cameo batting performances from Daly and Manek, ended the Town innings on a very respectable 222 all out from 53 overs.
Mill Hill Village started their innings in confident mood and Town failed to make early inroads. It was a pattern that remained. Mill Hill with all to play for, found runs easy to come by. Town with perhaps their minds on next season, found that their usual spark had gone missing.
With the score on 106, its was the effervescent Jack Daly to strike first with Cheesewright taking the catch behind to dismiss the impressive opener Gajjer. Spin king Krunal Patel then entered the arena to snare the remaining opener with Mekwan taking the catch low down in the slips. Wickets were in short supply, but some tight bowling from Patel and Raj Kothecha meant that Mill Hill had to remain fully focused if they were to win this all important game for themselves.
With 2 quick wickets from the excellent Kotecha, Mill Hill wobbled. Alas the wobble soon turned into a small blip as the finishing line was there to see. With the target of 223 reached, the Mill Hill Village cheers echoed throughout the ground. The victory had meant that the Division 8 title was theirs.
The victorious scenes will surely spur on Town to the season ahead next year.
Skipper Cheesewright was in reflective mood at the end of the game. "My heartfelt thanks goes out to all the players today and all that have represented the Town 2nd XI this season with great assurance and commitment . The spirit and attitude has been first class, even after the difficult start to our season. We certainly have the talent to take this team onto more headier parts of the table next year. There is much work to be done behind the scenes to make this happen, but with focused minds I am extremely confident that this will happen."
