Old Owens III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 29 Jun 2013 at 1 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 1 run

Match report Town arrived at Old Owens knowing that nothing less than 30 points was good enough. On what looked a fantastic batting wicket, Town were put into bat.

After an exciting start, Rajul Patel fell early. Khetia and Ramawat however, played some outstanding shots in a stand of 79 to fire Town along. With both batsmen primed to push on, Khetia was run out the instant he reached 50 and Ramawat perished in similarly catastrophic style soon after leaving Town on 110 for 3.

The middle order continued to make decent progress pushing on at 151 for 5 with 11 overs remaining and a score of 200 looked on the cards. A disastrous collapse though left town reeling on 154 for 8, courtesy of the excellent Martin (5-18 off 14). A valiant stand from Parmar and Bentvelzen though guided Town to a respectable 171 all out off the full 47 overs.

In response, Town started with the old bowl and nearly picked up 3 wickets off the first 2 overs. Nearly was the prominent word though, with several chances going to ground. The change of pace though brought Town back into the game with wickets falling regularly.

Yet another shift in momentum came in the form of Dowty who batted tremendously scoring a fine half century. Just as the balance looked to have swung firmly in Owens' favour, the enigma that is Bentvelzen snared Dowty, prompting yet another change in the odds.

As the hosts tail enders rode their luck and chances continued to slip through Town hands, the game looked up for Town, with Owens requiring just 20 off the final 7 overs, with 4 wickets in hand.

Khetia turned back to Parmar and the fired up Vadgama in a final attempt to prize out the Owens rearguard. Suddenly wickets began to fall, but the runs - mainly in edges - continued to come. When 2 mis-hits went the boundary, the game looked up for Town with just 8 required off the final 3 overs.

Another over, another wicket - 6 required from 2. Repeat the formula and Owens went into the final Vadgama over needing 3. A single early in the over, left the Owens number 11 on strike. 3 excellent dot balls followed.

With 1 ball to go, Owens still required 2 for the win, 1 for the tie. As bat finally connected with ball, the batsmen charged, but Khetia put in a frantic dive palming the ball to Vadgama, who gathered, charged at the stumps and took the bails off without a batsmen in sight.

The celebrations erupted, Town rejoiced and the Owens youngsters were crestfallen. Vice Tailor was delighted after the game - "We never lost hope, we never gave up, we never will!!"
