Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Totteridge Millhilians II on Sat 28 Jun 2014 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Despite a solid batting display and an eye catching maiden half century for Andy Burt, Northwood Town suffered a 7 wicket defeat to Totteridge Millhillians II in a rain interrupted game at Chestnut Avenue.

Both teams and the umpires should be congratulated for doing all that was possible to get the game on, and to keep the game on, despite frequent heavy showers throughout the day. Despite the rain, the wicket played fairly well and with overs reduced to 45/39, Town made a positive start through openers Akshay Loomba (24) and Raj Ahluwalia (14). After Loomba and Ahluwalia were to fall to smart one handed catches, Jamie Cotton (12) steadied the ship along with Andy Burt (54*) as Town pushed past 100. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and only Burt really applied himself, recording an excellent unbeaten half century. With sensible shot selection, solid defence and an array of trade mark straight drives Burt took Town to an imposing 184 after the allocated overs and Town were in with a sniff of recording their first league victory of the season.

As has been the case too many times this season, Town were unable to put together a complete performance and the frontline bowlers struggled to hit their lengths, being dispatched to various parts of the ground by the unconventional, but effective, pinch hitting opener. Running short of bowling options, skipper Michael Lister (3-65) brought himself on for a bowl and found some lateral movement to remove the top three batsmen but with a few half chances going down and some hopeful hitting from Totteridge sneaking through the gaps in the field, the opposition successfully chased down the total set by Town.

The Town players cut frustrated figures in the dressing room after an uncharacteristic bowling display but captain Michael Lister wasn't too disheartened and looked forward to the second half of the season: "We all knew this would be a tough season in Division 3 but we have a developing team, players are improving and we'll all be better players after taking the lessons from recent games. We're now firing with the bat and a number of the guys are in good form. Burty's innings was exceptional today. We have to remain patient with the ball when batsmen take us on because that's not going to change and it's up to us to find answers. If the effort levels remain as good as they have been, I'm sure we'll be able to pick up a couple of wins."
