Northampton Exiles v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jul 2015 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Northwood Town's 1s showed their true ability for the first time this season with a stunning all-round performance, clinching their first win of the season in an excellent and good natured game against a spirited Northampton Exiles side.
After losing the toss, Town were put to work in the field on a gorgeous day at Exiles. Kyle Lawrence (15 overs, 3 for 35) maintained his superb form, leading the attack with a fantastic spell of aggressive bowling which Exiles never got to grips with. Jack Daly supported him superbly, bowling attacking lines in a disciplined fashion and claiming the vital wicket of the attacking number 3, Patel, after a terrific catch by Veer Vadgama in the slips.
Veer joined the attack and quickly found his rhythm, but bad luck was to follow as he tore his hamstring during his run up in the third ball of his third over. Skipper Michael Lister finished off the over and picked up two quick wickets in his spell to leave Exiles reeling on 82 for 7.
The inevitable fightback ensued and Exiles' dangerous tailenders went on the attack to move past 100 and then diligently got to work in batting out their full allocation of overs to keep them in the game with a total of 169 on a decent track which offered something for the batters and the bowlers. Excellent spells from Justin Edgar and Krunal Patel made it hard work for Exiles as they showed the discipline and consistency that the Town bowling unit had craved in the latter overs on so many occasions this season.
In reply, Loomba and Lister set about their business in scintillating fashion, crashing boundary after boundary, refusing to let the Exiles' bowlers settle. With 52 off the first five overs, Town had made the positive start that they needed and there was no let up from there. After Lister departed with 47 from 32 balls, Loomba went on to record his first half century of the season with some delightful cover drives, mixing attack and defence with great maturity. Suvin Mekwan joined the vice captain and continued the onslaught with 3 huge sixes, superbly crafting an innings of 49 off 35 balls which killed off any hope of an Exiles comeback. After Loomba fell for 56 from 79 balls, having notched up 10 beautifully struck boundaries, the star of the season Kyle Lawrence took Town towards the winning line with a stunning six off the first ball he faced. He then clinched the much-needed victory for Town by stroking the ball through the covers to the cheers of the Town players.
Town skipper Michael Lister was delighted to see the first win notched up. "It's been a tough journey for the team but everyone stuck together and we've come out the other side and really showed what we can do today. I'm proud of every one of the players for their efforts, including the players who toiled for us in previous games but couldn't be available today, and it's great to see us responding with such positive cricket. We now have to take the confidence of today's emphatic win into the next 7 games and aim to pick up as many wins as possible."
