Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Southgate Adelaide on Sat 08 Aug 2015 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 50 runs
Match report
Town produced an excellent all-round performance to defeat Southgate Adelaide by 50 runs, improving their recent record to 3 wins out of 4.
Batting first, Town got off to a strong start with in-form Akshay Loomba (39) playing a patient and controlled innings at the top of the order. He was ably supported by Suvin Mekwan (38) who mixed solid defence with a number of beautifully timed drives - the highlight being a peach of an on-drive that raced along the outfield to the boundary, alluding the reach of deep mid-on. After he departed, Kyle Lawrence (50 off 64 balls) came in to play the innings of the day and push Town into a comfortable position at drinks, with a score of over 200 well within reach for the home side.
Southgate Adelaide had a slight resurgence during the back-end of the innings, taking the pace off the ball to good effect and stemming the flow of runs. The unusual sight of a slow left arm bowler being banned from the attack for 3 'beamers' then followed, and the lack of depth in the Southgate Adelaide attack was then fully exposed. Justin Edgar (25) and Raj Kotecha (12) gave Town some impetus by pushing singles and rotating the strike with more intent than seen previously in the Town innings, and some crisp blows from Edgar in the last few overs took Town over the 200 mark. A flurry of wickets towards the end meant that Town didn't fully capitalise on the strong position built by Loomba, Mekwan and Lawrence, but 215 looked imposing.
The Southgate Adelaide reply got off to an inauspicious start when opener Chandler - fresh off the back of two ducks in a row against Town - chipped his first ball inches over the head of Kyle Lawrence. He survived, but then Veer Vadgama ripped out the middle stump of the other opener, Doyle, and Town were up and running. Although several half chances followed, Chandler capitalised on his early good fortune and hit an accomplished 68 which gave Southgate Adelaide hope of pulling off the win. Jubel Ahmed raced to 49 at the other end, despite offering a regulation catch when still on 0, as he had done in the previous game against Town, when he made 79. Town's skipper Michael Lister kept up his run of bowling out the opposition left handers by picking up Ahmed one shy of his 50, and then the regular Town bowlers returned to the fold to make further inroads.
First Vadgama (3 for 32 from 9 overs) cleaned up the opposition captain, off-stump at a perfect angle to point the way back to the pavilion, and then the star of recent victories, Chandana Silva (4 for 9 from 5 overs), joined the attack and wrapped things up for Town with an incredible display of accuracy which the Southgate Adelaide tail had no answers for. The win was achieved in great style, with Justin Edgar taking two outrageous catches - firstly flying to his right in the slips to take a Stokes-esque stunner, and then scrambling to his left when at short leg to take the ball just inches from the turf.
30 points in the bag and Town are within sight of 8th place and clawing their way out of the relegation zone.
