Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Boxmoor III on Sat 20 Jun 2015 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Great perseverance from Town to battle against the rain and collect 30 points this week!
Town won the toss and elected to chase on a day that was bound to be impacted by rain. Mitesh Parmar and 3s debutant Bejal Shah started off in a typically tight fashion to put early pressure on Boxmoor. This was followed by a marathon bowling session from Tarang Katira and Pradip Pandey, who between them bowled 26 overs on the trot, picking up 4 wickets at an economy of just over two an over; showing the importance of partnerships in all aspects of the game. Speedster Nic Patel cameoed at the end with a brilliant 3 wickets from 4 overs to wipe off the Boxmoor tail.
A big shout out also to Town for its energy in the field. The bowlers received constant support. Standout moments included a brilliant full-length diving stop from Ajay Lal, a picture-perfect direct-hit run-out from Bejal Shah, all-round great glovework from stand-in keeper Vinodh Balakrishnan and a super diving catch and accurate run-out from Meeth Katira.
Kudos to Boxmoor for biding their time in the middle against some accurate bowling and sharp fielding, but they were eventually bowled out for 120.
Town was confident in its ability to chase down the score, but was wary that the rain might come down any minute. With that in mind, master blaster Salman Rizvi was sent in to open, and true to his reputation, the man welcomed Boxmoor’s opening bowler with a huge 6 in the first over. Talking of partnerships, Rizvi and #3 batsman Balakrishnan did a splendid job for a while matching each other shot-for-shot in some breath-taking, yet sensible and selective, shot-making.
In came the rain, and suitably worked as a distraction all around. To Boxmoor’s credit, they agreed to continue playing as long as they physically could in the rain, and came back out quickly once the rain stopped. Town lost some momentum in this phase but provided some character-building experiences to Town’s younger middle order. Town collapsed from 31/1 to 68/6 fairly quickly. Another rain break; this time Boxmoor on top. As the rain stopped, Town returned Boxmoor’s kindness by also getting back out onto the field quickly. One big advantage for Town, and probably a key swing factor: Boxmoor’s destructor in chief, A Colins, had to go home over that break!
Rabi Motiwala, for the third week running, dropped anchor, settling himself in for bed and breakfast, and really provided Town the stability to come back into the game. A 26-run partnership with the very fluent Bejal Shah and a subsequent unbeated 26-run partnership with Tarang Katira made sure Town cantered over the finish line. Great discipline yet again from Town’s middle order to take Town home.
All-in-all a characterful performance, strong bowling and fielding, and excellent aggression and resilience with the bat at different times, through some tough playing conditions. Well done lads – onwards and upwards!
