Old Albanians III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 1pm

Match report
Town showed a lot of character in holding out for a tough draw this week.
Town won the toss and stuck the opposition in on a hot day. Against an aggressive top order, Mitesh Parmar and Meeth Katira did well to hold their lines and lengths and come well back after both were met with early aggression from the opposition. Certainly the bowling find of the day was never-bowled-before-in-any-form-of-the-game debutant Harish Janardhanan. Confusing the batsmen with his offshpinners and arm balls, he was comfortably the most economical bowler and also picked up four wickets along the way, unfortnate not to get a hattrick after the opposition declared after him nabbing two in two balls!
From a fielding perspective, Town had a mixed day, with 3 catches let down early on (including 2 half-chances to be fair!), but coming back with a blinder of a run-out from returning player Skantha Sunderalingam and a brilliant catch at mid-wicket by Meeth Katira. Kudos also to returning player Nischal Randev for displaying a brilliant effort all-round in the field.
A mention must go to the opposition's Preest, who played a risk-free inning to get to 82 not out, showing just what the right balance of talent and playing within your abilities can bring at this level.
Chasing 244 in 45 overs was always going to require at least one, maybe two, blinder innings. J Harish had a promising start to his NTCC career, but unfortunately wasn't able to carry on. When the explosive Sajid Malik was caught at short fine leg, Town knew its task from thereonin would be very hard to win the game. Town continued to lose regular wickets and looked all set to lose, with it being 9 wickets down in a mere 27 overs.
What followed was almost miraculous. When "Mr. Dependable" Rabi Motiwala said to Captain/Umpire Taz Katira that "there are only 11 overs left, Nic Patel and I will bat it out", Katira wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. He wanted to draw the laugh/cry emoticon on whatsapp. Anyone at all who knew Nic Patel's temprament would have been equally confused on how to react. Add to that that Motiwala had been fasting for Ramadan, in the heat and was hit by his first-ever bout of hayfever, and almost left the game for ill health a few minutes before he went in to bat. Hell they did it. The picture-perfect defenses came not just from Motywala's bat, but also from Patel's. Over after over, they counted down the balls remaining, and farmed the strike in a beatiful manner to make sure they were both there at the very end. Phenomenal effort from Motiwala to play role model to the youngsters on how to bat out a tough situation, and from Patel to show the strength of character that he did to play in a way that is so unnatural to him. You could see the fume coming out of the opposition's ears as over after over, attempt after attempt, all they got from Motiwala and Patel were dead bats and big wide smiles. God must exist.
Well done to everyone involved, but special kudoses to Harish with the ball, Skan and Randy on the field, and over and above all, Rabi and Nic with the bat. Phenomenal result. Onwards and upwards - and back to winning ways next week, gents!
