Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Berkhamsted III on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report A great result for Northwood Town and probably the most convincing win for the 3s this season. Well done all around boys, particularly on a scorcher of a day!

Town won the toss and elected to field. Mitesh Parmar and Pradip Pandey opened the bowling and quickly vindicated the decision to field first, allowing Town its best start of the tournament. 16 overs in, the opposition found itself at 41/6, with both bowlers bowling extremely tight lines and lengths. A reversal of fortunes of sorts after Town itself had started the tournament with 9/4 and 16/5 in its first two games!

As the heat took its toll and the bowlers changed over, the opposition’s middle order decided to target a brief lapse in Town’s efforts by counter-attacking Town’s back-up seamers. Kudos to Skantha Sunderalingam for effecting his second quarter-chance run out in two games to break the opposition’s 7th-wicket partnership. From hereonin, the opposition reverted to its fall of wickets in heaps, the last four wickets falling over quickly to some smart bowling and catching. The final wicket of the day ensured that Mitesh Parmar bought a jug, and Town was left with 138 to chase down.

In Town’s chase, the returning Vinodh Balakrishnan was under strict instructions to make sure he didn’t throw his wicket away, and came back with a 78 (out!). His defial of orders was forgiven as he strung together a beautiful 113-run partnership with opener Jonathan Bentvelzen. What was impressive was the way that Vinodh took his time to get his eye in, and then waiting to capitalize on the weaker bowling that came as the bowlers started to wear. His 78 runs included 12 fours and 3 sixes. At the other end, JB played a great hand as senior partner and stabilizer and deserves his fair share of credit.

In typical Town fashion, having got to 126/1, Town felt generous on the opposition and somehow managed to lose 4 more wickets within the last 12 runs, but of course, managed to cross the line with 33 overs to spare, courtesy of the second-wicket partnership.

Well done Town for hanging in there on a tough day, and lots to learn from the two sets of wonderful partnership – Parmar and Pandey with the ball, and Balakrishnan and Bentvelzen with the bat. Well done on a great win – onwards and upwards!
