St Albans CC v Northwood Town Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 07 Jun 2015 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 19 runs
Match report
On a sunny day the Northwood Town Sunday XI journeyed to St Albans for the their first round fixture in the Herts Trophy. At the toss, Town skipper J.B called correctly and had no hesitation to bat first on what looked like a very good wicket accompanied by quick out field. Early signs were proving that decision to be correct as openers J.B and Mekwan started brightly, the latter making full use of the fielding restrictions by smashing runs to all parts in his usual fashion accompanied by a few nice boundaries from the other end. Lawrence arrived at the crease when Mekwan departed took up where he left off as the scoreboard ticked over nicely. Andy Burt (82*) joined the party and got stuck in for what was going to be a magnificent innings. His support came firstly from Krunal Patel who steadied the ship after a few wickets fell in succession to leave Town hanging on 91-6 and then from Syed who saw the team bat out their 50 overs posting a very competitive score of 227. After a lovely tea Town took to the field knowing that a huge amount of work now needed to be done as we had a total to defend. Opening bowlers Syed and Lawrence started in ruthless fashion and backed up by solid fielding and an excellent catch behind from Tailor, had St Albans 3 down in quick time. First change Ali Ghaffar was just as penetrating as three more wickets fell in what was a brilliant spell backed up by catches from Pandey and Kotecha and superb ground fielding from Huxley which left Town thinking there could be something special on the cards. This feeling was heightened when Mekwan got in on the act a claimed two more scalps to leave St Albans on the ropes at 83 for 8. What came next was a true test of character for the team. Having not been dislodged from the start, the remaining opener joined by Australian all rounder set about dismantling all the good work that Town had done up to that point. Together they took their score to 202 and closing in on victory. A catch went down, the fielding got a little loose, balls fell in-between fielders and the frustration was slowly building within the players. What had a little while ago seemed liked a dream victory was quickly turning into a nightmare. Multiple bowling changes had failed to stop the flow of runs from the two set batsmen but a call from the skipper for everyone to keep going and that the one chance that we needed would come proved to be right as Krunal Patel clung on to a ball that was smashed back at him to make the much needed breakthrough and bring out the number 11. We were back, as was our belief and the return of Syed proved too much as he removed their last man for what was an immensely emotional win for Town, who upset the odds to beat the big boys. What a game of cricket that was. There was only one way we were going to win that game today and that was if every single player played their part and thankfully they did. Burty's 82 not out is deserved of man of the match but it was a team effort as there were 12 captains out there today. Many thanks go to Colin Lynch for umpiring and Maulin Patel for scoring and I am very proud of every single player in our team. We won!
