Bushey III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2016 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
The combination of dropped catches and a middle order batting collapse cost Northwood Town 3s victory against Bushey 3s, who narrowly scraped home with just 2 wickets to spare.
Put into bat first on a pitch branded “unplayable” by home team Bushey, Northwood Town weathered the early loss of Jonathan Bentvelzen through a superb 89 run partnership between skipper Ben Rawson-Jones (57) and Vinodh Balakrishnan (31) that fused watchful defence with counter attacks. At 98-1 from 25 overs, a score of 200 looked very possible.
However, Balakrishan and Rawson-Jones, who hit his first half century since 2008, both departed in successive overs to smart catches – and the wickets started to tumble. 98-1 from 25 overs soon became 106-5 from 30 overs. After the runs dried up, only some late hitting from Taz Katira (33 not out) pushed Town up to their final total of 145-6 from 42 overs.
Town’s new ball pair of Mitesh Parmar and Meeth Katira began well, but the Bushey top order were let off the hook through a succession of dropped catches – a trend that continued throughout the innings.
The introduction of fiery paceman Keran Tailor (3-40) and wily spinner Rawson-Jones (3-35) reaped quick rewards, pegging the aggressive Bushey back to 108-8. Yet a few lusty blows – some landing perilously close to fielders – and more missed opportunities in the field saw Bushey scrape a very narrow win in yet another extremely tight game between the local rivals.
