Southgate Adelaide III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 20 Aug 2016 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 46 runs
Match report
3s travelled to Southgate Adelaide’s on a gloomy day. Stand-in skipper P. Tailor won the toss and elected to have a bowl first..
P. Pandey was given the ball to open the bowling. His first ball uprooting the middle stump of J. Muldoon for a diamond duck. There was a conversation whether it’s called a diamond duck, platinum duck or a royal duck, either way Town were off to a great start. What followed was great disciplined batting from A. Fitzpatrick and guiding the other batsmen into batting sensibly. However seeing the vast field with 2 less fielders enticed some of them to try hit over fielders. R. Motiwala taking an amazing catch at deep point from N. Patel’s bowling, running in and managed to palm the ball up before taking a dive catch to keep hold of the ball sending M. Ahsan back to the pavilion. B. McDermott came into bat and was dropped twice in as many balls in the same fielding position before getting his timing right to hit hard over the field, it was only when R. Doshi balled his first lose ball that the batsman smashed it just above M. Vadgama’s head for him to hold onto a great reflex catch. Next catch was then taken by the returning NTCC 3’s very own Hercules V. Patel of M. Vadgama’s bowling, running backwards and taking a clean catch over his head, his bulging biceps somehow extending his reach by a few inches. S.A 3’s M. Waleed entered the field and immediately starting playing big shots, K. Tailor and V. Balakrishan bowling well to him but he was in the same mood as he was in the previous fixture against us. We had a great appeal for a stumping of K. Tailor’s bowling but this wasn’t given as his heal was just over the line albeit in the air. Finally V. Balakrishnan took a very smart c&b to end the innings of the big hitting Waleed. Town now looking at wrapping up the tail end, but F. Gibson had other ideas, for me the pick of the batsmen on the day. He hit the ball cleaning and powerfully around the pitch scoring a quick 17. Last over, SA 3’s opening bat and skipper A. Fitzpatrick who had held his bat throughout the innings blocked out the last few balls despite all the banter aimed at him from SA 3’s player umpire. NTCC 3s were set 142 runs to win.
At this point in the game we felt we had given away far too many runs, however the wicket was getting drier and we were quietly confident we can chase this score down. As we walked back to the clubhouse for tea the rain came down and it rained for a while.
P. Pandey and R. Doshi opened the batting however the wicket was a minefield, some balls staying low, others bouncing quite high. R. Doshi gifting his wicket to the smart slow bowler B. McDermott. From this point Town started rebuilding but then P. Pandey was run out hovering outside his crease after an LBW appeal and the fielder at point running in and getting a direct hit. From this point the pressure was enough to keep Town pegged back. We needed one person to score 30+ runs and we could have made a real game of it. Ultimately despite batsmen playing their first over or 2 really well we were not able to capitalise on this and lost wickets too quickly. N. Patel showed great maturity with the bat to remaining at the crease for close to 19 overs. 3’s need to start looking to push the ball into spaces and take quick singles and push for 2 runs. M. Vadgama and K. Tailor pushed the score on quickly but to no avail.
Southgate Adelaide 3’s worthy winners by batting extremely smartly despite losing a wicket with the first ball of the game.
