Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Reed II on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by two wickets
Match report
The first league game under the Loomba era was a fantastically competitive game which went down to the last 3 balls.
Losing the toss, town were asked to bat on a green wicket. Loomba and Haji, the latter being introduced to the 1s this season as Loombas latest opening partner after a fantastic season in the 2s last year, got off to a decent start on a hard, true track despite the green cover. After an opening 25 run partnership, another player new to the 1s, Amish Unalkat took his position at 3 with both hands playing an aggressive innings with one fantastic straight 6 into the gardens. However, it was one big shot too many for Unalkat as he skied one to covers. Partnerships continued to blossom for Town as Lawrence and Burt toiled away against the spinners after the loss of Haji albeit at a slower run rate. In the last 10, ex-captain Lister and Vadgama put on a masterclass show to dramatically increase the run rate with a 60 run partnership in just 5.3 overs through excellent running and smart batting to get town to a competitive 217 off 50 overs.
In reply, town got off to an economical start which is the name of the game in this format, reducing the runs and the asking rate kept increasing for Reed. With two early wickets from Lawrence (9.4-2-34) and tight bowling from Vadgama (10-1-25), the game was tilting in Towns favour but for the partnership of Johnson and Samson to defy anything that was thrown at them. With decent spells from Daly, Malik and K. Patel it was debutant all rounder S. Patel proving to be the bowler troubling the Reed batsmen the most. With some good bowling and excellent fielding leading to a couple of run outs, Town were clearly in the driving seat. Enter Robertson who looked to take roll the dice, take some risks and shift momentum. With some clean hits on the leg side, it was raining boundaries and there wasnt much Town could do about it. After Daly picked up the wicket of Robertson with only a handful or runs to get, there was a small bit of hope for town. With the scores tied with 1.3 overs to go, Daly and Lawrence did well to bowl 6 consecutive dot balls until number 10 Tidy flashed hard in the 4th ball of the final over to send the ball flying over the keeper and slip for four runs and to seal the game for Reed.
New club captain Loomba spoke after the game: "It was a fantastic game of cricket, thoroughly enjoyed by players and spectators played in good spirit. Although it wasnt the result we wanted, there were plenty of positives to take from the game. We have struggled with the bat over the last couple of years and something we want to address this year so building partnerships and putting 217 on the board in the first league game was satisfying as well as a good effort with the ball. There are still some basics we need to work on in the field but if we perform like we did today every week, we will be in a good place come the end of the season."
