Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Leverstock Green II on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Winning the toss again, Town elected to bowl first in the must win, promotion battle v Leverstock Green.
Lawrence and Daly started reliably as usual, getting the ball to swing and hitting decent areas until the former jarred his knee and was unable to continue bowling after just his fourth over whilst Daly continued to bowl class picking up two wickets. Silva replacing Lawrence bowled reliably again, working in great partnership with Vadgama, both picking up a wicket a piece. Vadgamas wicket to Fleming described by the umpire as a completely unplayable ball as it nipped back in through the gate to hit middle stump and finishing with incredible figures of 6 overs for just 8 runs! The spin twins of K. Patel and R. Kotecha were introduced with the field spread and Iqbal and Wallace looking to take the attack to Town. Town came off the field pretty pleased with the efforts to restrcit Leverstock to 230, a score Town would fancy themselves to chase down.
In response, Town started off lightning quick as usual before losing Loomba for 18 to a delighted Walker, celebrating as if he has bowled Virat Kohli. This didnt phase Vadgama as he continued to play his shots and punish any loose deliveries whilst Leverstock worked through towns middle order with town on 89/3 off 18 overs. Enter Sangeet Patel, the superstar from 2014 who hasnt quite found form with his return to the club, batted very sensibly around Vadgama, ensuring Town dont lost any more quick wickets and that this partnership gets them within distance of the finish line. Vadgama continued to bat like a man at the top of his game before being triggered on 74 with the team score on 167, with some describing the decision as the worst they have ever seen as the ball struck him on his upper thigh as he was dancing down the wicket. Sangeet continued to plug away but was helpless as wickets continued to tumble around him. At 201/8 and down requiring 30 runs in just 3 overs after a fantastic 10 over period for the visitors, enter Krunal Patel who in his first 4 deliveries hit 6,6,4,4, putting Town in pole position again within 3 minutes before getting run out. With a tense final couple of overs, Daly batted sensibly to ensure he gave Sangeet support and luckily, being the fastest runner at the club managed to turn a risk single into a two as Daly sprinted back and dived into his crease, unfortunately dislocating his shoulder in the process. He was determined to stick out there with Sangeet with Town requiring 4 runs from 3 balls and the whole club feeling anxious and tense. Thankfully, Sangeet saw the side home with a huge six over the bowlers head and held the pose as Town celebrated with pure ecstasy to keep the promotion fight alive.
Loomba spoke after the game: 'Incredibly proud of every single player today, we came into the game as underdogs against a very good Leverstock side but we proved to ourselves that we can beat anyone on our day. When someone fails, someone else will perform which is why we are seeing success this season. It is still essential we focus on every game and not let this slip to keep the pressure on the top two'.
