Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Northampton Exiles II on Sat 16 Jun 2018 at 01:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets.
Match report
After 2 back to back away fixtures, town’s 2nd XI were looking forward to play at home. Conditions were overcast and were going to remain same all day. Town won the toss and elected to bat first. Town openers, started very positively, in particular K. Patel who was hitting the ball like a tracer bullet if pitched full but it was the ease at which he was doing it, made it absolutely astonishing. Soon town were 50 in 9 overs without any loss. Filed spread out and Patel drilled another full ball but this time straight to the deep mid-on boundary and the fielder made no mistakes. Sheikh joined Ramawat and kept the run-rate up by playing his usual game but got out trying to defend a ball that bounced and held a bit, the score at this time was 80 for 2 in 17 overs. Having had a good start, town were expected to build upon this and hoping to put a big total but it wasn’t the case. As is the case with classic cults, town lost 4 wickets for 10 runs in the next 9 overs leaving a sorry score card of 90 for 5 in 27 overs, all 4 wickets were a result of either a poor shot selection or bad decision. Palan and S. Patel tried to build a partnership but couldn’t accumulate more than 23 runs together before Palan got out and S. Patel followed as well. Towards the end, Janardhan played a measured innings to take town's total to somewhat respectable score of 157 all out in 48th over.
Town were 40/50 runs short, given the start they had but felt they had a fighting chance to defend the score given their recent success with the bowling. After a lovely tea, town took the field and started with Malik and Wazi. Exile opener, Dhrupesh Patel looked like he only had one idea, hit the every delivery and he did succeed. Exiles scored their 50 runs in 8 overs without losing any wickets and Patel scoring 40 of them. Town tried everything but without any success and Patel kept on playing his shots. It was quite evident that if he bought a lottery ticket that day, the chances were that he would win. It was such kind of a day where everything went his way.
Soon Exiles were 100 without a loss in 24th over. Although some good bowling by S. Patel and Sheikh did put the brakes on scoring rate but it was too little too late as Exiles crossed the target in 34 overs with a loss of 1 wicket that fell to Naqvi who got the other opener out. In the process Patel got rewarded for playing fearless cricket and got his maiden ton, well played.
It was one of those days where any plan, any change would just not work and everything went in favor of the batsman, including several close lbw shouts. Yes we could have scored extra 40 runs, had one of the lbw went our way early on, if we were not missing our 3 regular bowlers, who knows. At the end, town lost the match by 9 wickets.
Lots to take away for individuals and think about it and come back stronger next game away at little Berko.
