Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Luton Town & Indians IV on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 1:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 40 runs.

Match report Entering into last quarter of the league matches, town welcomed Luton Town Indians at home. With average summer this season so far and rain following its trend to not fail on Friday, it was great to get a game on in good conditions. Town lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Town opened their innings with Gairola and Janardhan with a cautious approach and Gairola soon got into his rhythm and started playing freely while Janardhan struggled to get to the terms with the slow pitch. Slowly the scoreboard got ticking but Janardhan got out in the 8th over. Kotecha joined Gairola in the middle but town soon lost Gairola in slips leaving town scorecard 31/2 in 11 overs. Anjum walked into middle and started to rebuild the innings with Kotecha who was holding 1 end, Together they added 25 runs before Anjum got out to a mistimes shot. Pandey walking in with a resolution and determination, kept the score ticking with Kotecha.

It was very clear by now that every run on this pitch is going to be gold dust and the idea was to get past score of 150 which would be a competitive total. Between Kotecha & Pandey, they added valuable 40 runs to take town total to 95 in 30 overs before Pandey got out trying to up the score rate. Stage was perfect for Patel to walk in and give town innings much required impetus. Patel started with a crisp boundary but town started loosing wickets from the other end depriving Patel the much needed strike. With a 150+ score in mind, town kept pushing and given the conditions kept loosing wickets that included Patel. A gem of an innings came late down the order from Malik who propelled town score to 149 which looked a daunting task at some point earlier. In the end, town felt it was a good total give the conditions and backed themselves to restrict the opposition.

Blessed are those who get to eat the league famous tea prepared by Marjorie. After a lovely tea, town took the field with an aim to keep the opposition down below 149. New ball was shared between the ever reliable ‘Olden Golden’ duo of Malik and Pandey and Pandey removed the opener in his 1st over giving town the perfect breakthrough. Khan the other opener was quite clear with his approach and smashed boundary on each of the last delivery from Malik’s over when the ball was pitched up. This approach quickly took LTI to 40 with the loss of 1 wicket in 11 overs. Desperate for a breakthrough, bowling change was introduced and Syed got a breakthrough straight away when he cleaned up Zar through his defence with lovely seam and swing. Faisal joined Khan in the middle who was clear in his approach and together they kept the scoring rate up and took LTI to 55/2 in 16 overs. Anjum from the other end into the attack was accurate from his 1st over finally ended Khan’s innings by trapping him in front of the wickets. A key breakthrough that town needed badly to remain in the game. From there on wickets fell at regular interval. Syed who ended up bowling his full quota of over at a stretch bowled beautifully making full use of conditions on offer and ended up taking 3 crucial wickets. With LTI 80/5 in 25 overs, Patel was introduced into the attach. Although he went for couple of boundaries in his 1st over, cleaned up no 6 with a lovely delivery and kept things tight in his next couple of overs before cleaning-up no 8. With LTI 96/7 in 30 overs and needing 53 more runs to win, it was time for the main bowlers to return and finish the job. Both Malik and Anjum were brought into the attack and it took them 5 overs to clean the LTI’s tail restricting them to 109.

A fantastic team effort from all on a pitch that needed application, determination, concentration but above all commitment and that is what exactly every single town player exhibited. Brilliant win based on pockets of small contributions while batting and equally shared responsibility while bowling. We move on.
