Botany Bay v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 1:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs.

Match report Town 2nd XI arrived at Botany Bay and were greeted with a lovely track with a fast outfield. Town won the toss and decided to bowl 1st.

Malik & Patel took the new ball and started with good lengths. Bay openers took their time to settle and made sure every single bad delivery was put to the boundary. Both bowled well but the odd boundary kept coming. At the end of the 10th over, Bay were 60/0. In search of a wicket, bowling change was introduced and Malik was replaced by Syed but Patel was kept on as he found his rhythm and was bowling really well. Syed broke the opening partnership in his 3rd over and Patel finished his full quota on a trot. Madhavan replaced Patel but the scoring rate was kept around 5/6 RPO aided by a batting track and a fast outfield. Bay batsmen took their time but once set, they took the attack and started scoring thick & fast, In order to search for the wickets, town tried quite a few options but all went for runs. Anjum kept the lid on for a bit and got a few wickets but Town conceded 100 runs in the last 12 overs. Bay finished on  263/4 in 40 overs.

Town were confident of chasing down the target as they have regularly  scored 250+ in recent innings. Town opened with Gairola and returning skipper Ramawat. Town were very unfortunate to lose Gairola run out in the 3rd over trying to take a very tight single. Burt joined Ramawat in the middle and both decided to rebuild the inning cautiously. Bay opening bowlers bowled really well on a track that needed tight discipline, which they did and gave nothing away. The next 5 overs yielded hardly any runs and Town were 17/1 at the end of 8th over. Both batsmen felt they were set and decided to up the scoring rate but both found it very difficult to either score any boundaries or even rotate the strike, such was tight strangle by the Bay opening attack. Pressure finally gave in and Burt got out trying to force a shot. Ramawat too tried his best to up the scoring rate but couldn't get the scoring rate going and finally his painful innings came to end in the 19th over, leaving a very sick looking scoreline 63/3. Bay opening attack bowled their full quota of spell and caused major damage to the Town chase.

In order to breathe oxygen into the Town chase, Verma was sent in and together with Aggarwal he started the scoreboard ticking. The odd loose deliveries started coming and they both made sure they were put to the boundary. Together they added 40 runs in the span of the next 4 overs. Aggarwal(34) who was looking very good so far got run out trying to take a very tight single, leaving town scoreline 102/4 in 23 overs RR 4.4. Town needed 161 in the remaining 17 overs with RRR  9. If it was to be done, it could have been done by the pair in the middle now - Verma & Anjum. They both got into the act quick enough and played some clever cricket. Anjum kept rotating the strike and gave Verma as much strike as possible and Verma made sure anything loose was put out of boundary, next 7 overs produced 45 runs and Town were 147/4 at the end of 30th over.

Town still needed 120 runs in the next 60 deliveries and both Verma & Anjum gave everything they had - running hard for every run that was available, putting anything loose to the boundary but when you are against 9 fielders on the boundary, you always find it hard to score at 12RPO. Both kept the chase on and scored 50 runs in the next 30 deliveries. Pressure was clearly visible on Bay as both town batsmen looked on a mission. Town now needed 70 from the last 30 balls. Every fielder now on the boundary but both batsmen kept going on for the next few overs before Varma fell at deep long on going for a maximum, his brilliant effort ended in the 38th over and a very fine partnership of 114 runs came to an end. From there on it was all about making sure we got the maximum batting points. Anjum again played a brilliant innings, initially supporting Verma and later taking on the attack himself but too much was left on town's middle order to deliver. Town lost the match by 32 runs.

It was a tough game to lose, Town top order let the chase down, specially skipper Ramawat who just couldn't get going and was guilty of leaving too much to do for their brilliant middle order. A few lessons to be learned for the Town but a massive effort by Verma and Anjum to turn the game on its head and gave Town a chance to come closer to the target but it was too much to do in too little time.

"We are a good team who came across another very good team today. We should learn our lessons, play smart cricket and should stick to our strengths and we should be back to our winning ways." We move on...
