Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Cockfosters II on Sat 15 Aug 2020 at 1:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 25 runs.
Match report
After a record breaking week of hot weather in the previous week, this week was full of tropical weather and such was extend that out of 140 league games in Herts league, only 8 took place and Town 2nd XI along with Cockfosters 2nd XI were fortunate enough to be part of one of them.
Despite a lot of rain in prev few days, on Saturday am, pitch was relatively dry and outfield fit for the game. Expecting a downfall in the late afternoon, it was agreed that match will be reduced to a 25 overs each. Skipper Pandey lost the toss and town were asked to bat 1st on a pitch that demanded respect and discipline.
In the absence of other regular opener, skipper Pandey decided to take the responsibility on himself and joined Gairola in the middle. Skipper Pandey in the 1st over played a lovely st. drive past bowler for 4 but got out on the next deliver trying to play the same shot. Gairola too faltered trying to play the same shot that Pandey tried in the following over. Anjum and Aggarwal in the middle looked to consolidate the innings but the partnership couldn't get going as Aggarwal got caught in the covers leaving town scoreline 37/3 at the end of the 5th over.
The pitch demanded respect and patience & this is what exactly Anjum and 2s debutante Verma did for the next few overs, although Verma couldn't handle the self imposed (partially forced by Anjum on the other hand) discipline and started to cut loose in order to breath normally. Anjum on the other hand kept defending and punished the loose deliveries. Together they added valuable 60 runs between them before Verma got out stumped. But before he got out, he showed us the glimpse of what he is capable of, scoring 37 on a tricky pitch, taking town out of troubled waters to a shore of 87/4 at the end of 15th over.
Stage was perfect for Mapara who walked in and after paying the usual respect & regards to all for a few deliveries, started smashing the bowlers all around. Anjum(32) again played an anchor role in a partnership with Mapara and added 40 runs before getting out in the 22nd over trying to keep the scoring rate high. Town finished their inning on 153/8 in 25 overs. A pretty decent score under the challenging conditions.
After a 20 minutes break, town new ball pair Malik and Patel opened the shutters, Malik found his rhythm straight away and broke the opening partnership in the 5th over but Patel on the other end found it difficult to control the new ball. Cockfosters were 23/1 at the end of the 5th over. Mapara replaced Patel and got a breakthrough in his 1st over when a rank trash delivery got a treatment but Aggarwal took a brilliant one handed catch at covers to earn a smile from Mapara who was rather mysteriously annoyed at something that day so far. Syed replaced Malik from the other end but he too had an off day and conceded some runs and was replaced by fast becoming 'ever reliable', Madhawan. Mapara found his fire & smile back and took wickets in each of his next 2 overs reducing Cockfosters to 65/4 at the end of 12th over. Together, they both finished their excellent full spell of 5 overs leaving scoreline 93/5 at the end of 17th over. Mapara took 4 wickets and Madhavan was unlucky to pick any.
Cockfosters still needing 60 odd runs from the last 46 deliveries with 5 wickets in hand, game entered the last interesting leg. Skipper Pandey again had an Eureka moment and brought Verma into the attack and Verma bowled beautifully according to the conditions and soon broke the partnership that was looking threatening. Together with Anjum they both ran through the remaining overs and crashed any opposition hopes that were left. Cockfosters finished their innings on 129/8 in their allocated 25 overs. Town won the game by a decent margin of 25 runs. A win that was based on some all round performances from Mapara, Anjum and Verma.
A massive thanks to our skipper Pandey in making sure the game got on and a shout-out to our opposition for playing the game in the great spirit. We move on.
