Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Watford Town II on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 12:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets
Match report
The long wait for the cricket season finally ended when Town 1s took on newly promoted side Watford Town II. It was a beautiful summers day and after a wonderful effort from our club legend Adam the outfield looked lush.
Losing the toss Watford Town II chose to bat first a decision A Loomba was happy with knowing how slow the wicket played last week in an inter club game and the variable bounce it offered. Northwood Town’s bowlers took full advantage of it. J Daly got a wicket on the very first ball of the match while K Lawrence was very unlucky not to pick up any despite beating the bat so many times, the Watford Town II batters never looked comfortable. The opening 12 over spell almost ended the chances of Watford Town II posting a big total with J Daly picking up 3 wickets and Lawrence 1 wicket. R Aggarwal made his debut for the Town and boy did he look like he’s been playing with the club for years. Quickly settling into his spell with great control over his line & length! He also got in the act and picked up 2 wickets including a one hand stunner from V Vadgama (will still go down as a drop for Unalkat). We’re running out of superlatives to describe spectacular catches Vadgama takes and this was up there (but rest assured for dropping a dolly K Patel used every single word from oxford dictionary). Then on came the spin duos of K Patel and R Kotecha and while Patel was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, R Kotecha ripped through Watford Town’s remaining batters taking 3/7 in just 2.3 overs (despite conceding just 7 runs Northwood Town members will pleased to know that he did get hit for a maximum thus keeping his record intact). He bowled with beautiful pace and flight that we’ve never seen him do before with such pinpoint accuracy. A wonderful display of bowling and in particular fielding meant Northwood Town needed 111 to win the game.
Opening the batting for the Town, A Loomba departed without troubling the scorers (blessing in disguise some called it as the scoring tablet wasn’t connecting to the score box). S Modi coming at 3 played his natural game attacking Watford Town’s bowlers from the get go and played some lovely straight drives. But then what happened was surely a contender for the village moment of the day when he left a straight one which rattled his off stump and got sledged by Watford Town II’s player just to put it nicely wasn’t wearing a correct cricket footwear!!! A Burt also departed quickly straight after leaving the Town 39/3. At that moment the Town batters from 6-8 started padding up fearing a collapse was about to happen. But A Unalkat joined Vadgama at the crease and what followed was a masterclass on how to build a partnership. Vadgama was determined to the Town home by carrying his bat and played a very slow & cautious inning which is very unlike him. At the other end Unalkat was doing what he does bat playing numerous gorgeous checked drives to pile on the runs. The Town lost no further wickets as they put on a partnership of 74 runs. Unalkat finished in 44* and Vadgama on 28*. Northwood Town winning the game by 7 wickets.
A Loomba spoke after the game: It was a clinical performance. Every player played their role whether it was with the ball, the bat or in the field. Let’s keep up the momentum and play brilliant cricket like this when we welcome Bishop’s Strotford II next Saturday!
