Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v Pinner III on Sat 08 Aug 2020 at 1:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 126 Runs
Match report
Northwood Town 4th XI first fixture at Chestnut Avenue.
Town 4th XI welcomed newly formed Pinner 3rd XI on a very hot day.
Pinner won the toss and elected to bowl first, it was clear from the outset that they wanted everyone to have a game. As Pinner had travelled with 13players and In spirit of developing players and for the love of cricket both skippers agreed on allowing all players to have a bat and Pinner to field with 12 players.
With any newly formed teams and new recruits and colts breaking through skipper Tailor had to try his best to make sure players got a game and was fully expecting for everyone to get a bat and a bowl.
Kunal and new member Smit were asked to open. Smit shocked at being asked to open but it was clear to see the inner smiles breaking through. Both set about their business with Kunal taking the charge on bowlers and Smit playing the supporting role. Both Batsmen had a tough job and kept finding fielders with shots that would have either raced to the boundary or would have been 2 runs. Pinner fielding was spot on and despite only having one extra fielder they made it feel like they had 4 extra fielders on the pitch. In the 10th over Kunal (22) got caught to some good bowling and ultimately a fielder who managed to keep eyes on the ball despite the ball disappearing into a very bright sky. Next entered Karan Verma, a player who seemed over the moon when asked if he could bat at number 3, he strode into the middle of the playing field like he owned it. What was witnessed next was the 3rd highest individual score of a Northwood Town player. Karan started off playing cautious and took several singles and then decided he had his eye in and went aerial, Smit still playing the perfect supporting role and playing his natural game. Smit was unlucky not to have reached his first 50 for NTCC, he was caught on 45 to a spectacular catch at cover, as he walked of the square they had just put on a 127run partnership. Next enter Mairaj and he ably supported Karan who was now in monster mode with all fielders on the boundary. Karan smashed his 100th run with a monster 6 straight down the ground and then during a sanitation break requested if he can stay on to get 150 as we were discussing retiring him, however all town players felt he should stay on as he is a new member and its good for him to get the runs under his belt. Karan retired not out on 157, his innings consisted of 20 x 4s and 10 x 6s, to a standing ovation from all players. Mairaj got to 28not out and Dom making his first outing of the season showed his class with the 3 balls he faced and got 5 not out. NTCC 4s scored a massive 268 runs despite Pinner bowlers bowling really well.
After a quick break and Tailor very aware that many in Towns side haven’t had much of a game decide that anyone who didn’t bat has to bowl. This was met by new recruit Jaineel looking in disbelief that he has to bowl, he said I cant bowl, I’m a batsman but instructions were clear. With such a large total on the board now was the time to experiment. Karan and Smit who are both also bowlers and wanted in on the act, however they respected the decision, but what a nice problem to have for any skipper.
Hiren and Krunal shared the new ball and bowled really well, however Pinner opening bat was clearly in the mood to chase down the total, but it was one too many big shots and Krunal bowled him just flicking off the bail on the off stump, many in the field didn’t see the bail come off and only Krunal, Dom and Kunal at 1st slip celebration did everyone realise. Hiren continued with his tight lines and was rewarded with 2 wickets in his 5th over and another in this 6th. New recruit Sam Devine was next thrown the ball to bowl from the clubhouse end, his claims of not being able to bowl was rewarded with a wicket in his 4th ball hitting the middle stump. At the other end Akshar was introduced and somehow even after growing well over 2 foot still manages to fit into his colts cricket shirt, he had a shocking first over but what followed next was sheer brilliance taking 4 wickets in his spell. With pinner wickets falling fast Jaineel was asked to bowl, despite bowling in the right areas the pinner batsman a young 12 year-old, was able to get himself under the ball and get the ball to the boundary. On another day his spell would have gotten a wicket. Another double bowling change was made and Hit and Mairaj took the ball. Hit bowling a maiden wicket over with Dom taking an impressing catch behind the stumps and Mairaj getting a wicket on his 2nd ball. Pinner 3s were bowled out for 142.
Captains words “The game was played in very good spirits and we all owe one of the Pinner dads for umpiring for the full game a lot of gratitude. I would definitely like to play Pinner 3s again for numerous reasons, what a great team with a good skipper. With the batting I am gutted for those who didn’t get a bat but cricket is a funny game. I had difficult decisions to make and whether I should retire Karan in a friendly however with selection at NTCC needing a shake up it was decided to let him carry on, I was told after the game by another player that Karan had dreamt of hitting over 150runs, shows that positive mental attitude does go along way. The new recruits were all very patient and it helped skippering them for the first time. Pinner bowlers especially Kiera were really good and on another day would have rattled through a batting lineup. They stuck to their guns and if it wasn’t was Karan it could have been a different game. A big shout out to Kunal for doing on-field skipper duties whilst I nursed an injury on the side lines. I’m glad from what I saw off the new recruits at NTCC that the future looks great, but what also it was a proud moment to see some of the colts, who I was involved in training, play senior cricket. The future is bright.”
