Cheshunt Rosedale v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 6 Wickets

Match report Town travelled to Cheshunt Rosedale this week looking to keep their unbeaten run going and stay top of the table. History shows games against CR have always been feisty and close. But what happened this week even God (not Harshil) could have predicted it. In Colin’s absence KP stepped to umpire sending shivers down the bowlers’ spine knowing they won’t get many decisions in their favour.

Winning the Toss Cheshunt decided to bat first looking to put runs on the board on what looked like a belter of the pitch in a very hot conditions. However Town’s opening pair of K Lawrence and J Daly had other ideas. Lawrence returning for his 1st game of the season after 4 weeks off looked like he had attended England cricket’s team training camp as he gave nothing away and runs were very hard to come by. J Daly on the other hand bowled well and was very unlucky not getting a LBW decision in favour because it wasn’t going to hit the stumps (contrary to what S Modi thinks). Although runs were hard to come by and bowlers bowling well first wicket actually came from a good piece of fielding and run out by N Madhavan. K Lawarence also got in the act straight after removing McGreevy and finished his superb spell with figures of 7-4-9-1. He was very unlucky not to have picked up more wickets. Town’s first change bowlers didn’t let CS of the hook as Madhvan after couple of sloppy overs to start with got in his rhythm and picked up 2 more wickets. However after recent performances and coming under pressure in this game (similar to Broad and Jimmy recently for England) K Shah proved to his critics never to write him off based on couple of games. CS batsmen just couldn’t play him and wickets started falling very quickly like house of cards. In his 8 overs spell K Shah only conceded 30 runs and picked up 5 wickets. Was truly an outstanding spell of bowling and he celebrated his 5th wicket with aeroplane celebration which just shows how much it meant for him. CS ended their inning 108 all out.

Town’s skipper and few lads were out celebrating friend’s birthday on Friday (usual stuff for some players). One drinks to too many drinks laid the foundation for Town skipper to start offering to pay match levies of V Vadgama by saying he will score more runs than him. So back to Saturday Loomba opened with Veer who missed few previous games as he got married. Best wishes to the new couple from every one at Town. Loomba started quickly playing a controlled dab at third man for a boundary. However lazy footwork meant he left a gap between bat and pad got bowled leaving town 4/1. In the past this would have been tricky 109 to chase but not with the way Town top order has been batting for couple of years now. In came S Modi and with Vadgama started to add runs freely (although be it from Vadgama’s bat only). Vadgam for the past couiple of years has been in sensational form and today was nothing different. Even using thesaurus we struggled to come up with words to describe shots he played. From walking down the wicket (penguin style) and effortlessly hitting it straight down the ground to a very wristy flick off his pad for a 6. It was truly a masterclass and wouldn’t look out of place in Indian cricket team’s top order for the WTC. S Modi also played couple of beautiful shots but they often say jealousy brings sorrows in life and sometgin similar happened here. With Vadgama going strongly S Modi got toooooo gassed (in his own words) and tried to score quick runs and gave his wicket away. Batting at no 4 was M Patel who was also under some pressure but not today. After a cautious start he also got in the act and started scoring freely and as usual his inning included a trademark six over extra cover (bookies have suspended a market for him to hit a 6 over cover). Vadgama got out trying to accelerate but town got home with 6 wickets in hand. Winning runs came from M Patel’s bat after promising CS slip fielder that he will finish it off in style and so did he nearly breaking a clubhouse window with a massive 6. Vadgama’s 31 and M Patel’s 35* bringing comfortable win.

Loomba spoke after game: “From start to finish it was an exceptional performance in all 3 departments. Very happy to see K shah and M Patel back picking up wickets and scoring runs.” Reporter asking Loomba about winning the league: “It’s still a long way and we’re really not thinking about it. We want to take each game as it comes and try to win. We’re focussing on our next game against Rickmansworth now!”
