Old Haberdashers v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 12pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Town 1s travelled away to Old Haberdashers looking to build a winning run after last week’s win. Winning the toss Town skipper elected to field first.
Looking at the pitch it was clear it was going to be struggle for any batsman to score runs. There was lot of grass (weed) on the pitch. But it also meant bowlers had to put it in the right spot and Town’s opening pair of J Daly and R Aggarwal did just that. Uneven bounce, swing, seam (helped by freezing clody weather conditions) it was clear Old Habs batters were struggling to get anything away. R Aggarwal gave Town early breakthrough while J Daly from the other end was very economical and unlucky not to pick up more wickets (included a drop from V Vadgama who showed it is possible to do a long barrier in the air jumping). J daly bowled 10 over spell taking 25/2. Town skipper also picked up an early wicket in his spell leaving Old Habs 51/4 in 21 overs. However, A Watts and H Mehta started putting a good partnership together as Town spinners struggled to keep the same control as seamers. V Vadgama on the other end was his usual economical with his 10 over going for just 17 runs with no wickets. I Anjum removed dangerous looking H Mehta while a brilliant runout from S Modi to remove Watts meant Town were back on top with Old Habs 112/6 after 35 overs. From there runs were hard to come by as Town fielded brilliantly and eventually Old Habs were all out for 143. This was largely down to R Aggarwal for an amazing death over spell as he ran through Old Habs lower order like a hot knife through butter. He finished with excellent figures of 25/4 in his 8 overs.
After a wonderful tea provided by Old Habs chasing 144 was not going to be easy on that pitch. However just like his bowling R Aggarwal had other ideas and started punishing Old Habs bowlers with anything lose. He started playing shots all around the ground and it looked like he was batting on an absolute road. N Madhavan on the other hand played cautious inning supporting R Aggarwal’s aggression and Town were 60/0 in 15 overs. After N Madhavan’s departure S Modi put on 39 runs partnership with R Aggarwal to put Town in a commanding position. R Aggarwal passed his 50 with a brilliant pulled 6 over square leg and all seemed fine. However, Town never likes to do things easy way and mini collapse saw Town go from 98/1 to 123/6. All was needed was someone to support R Aggarwal who was going so strong at one end. And J Halai did that as R Aggarwal smashed his way to 90* to see Town home by 4 wickets. Words cannot describe R Aggarwal’s inning and looked like he was batting on a completely different pitch to everyone else in both teams. His inning included 11 fours and 2 sixes.
Skipper K Patel spoke after the game: It was a very pleasing win and the one which should have been bit more comfortable than what it was. Man of the match R Aggarwal was something special today with the ball and bat. He deserves all the applauds he is getting for that performance today! Hopefully, we can build on the last 2 week’s performances and put a good winning run together.
Town will host Cheshunt Rosedale next week.
