Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Reading Lions CC on Sat 21 Sep 2024 at 11.30am
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets

Match report Northwood Town CC hosted Reading Lions to bring the curtain down on the 2024 season at Chesnut Avenue.

Departing Club Secretary; Abdul Firfire took the reigns for this match. Being one of the few organised people at this club you now read before you a match report a day after the game was played.

Captain Firfire lost the toss and Town were asked to bowl first. The plan was to bowl first in any case. Opening the bowling were Ibbad Kayani (3-2-6-2) and Babukutty (7.1-2-11-4). Ibbad bowled with great pace and accuracy. A special mention to his exceptional slip catching. The Reading Lions batsman were quaking in their boots and backing away from the delivery’s. Perhaps our keeper (Saad) calling Ibbad our overseas player might have added to the fear factor. On the end Stanley B bowled a sublime length and the ball was jagging off the seam. A true master of his craft and unlucky not to be given the Captains Player of the year for the 4’s. However, we did have the 1’s Captains Player of the year and the darling of Colin Lynch’s farewell speech on hand. The ever-youthful Sajid Malik (4-0-13-3). Town wrapped up the Lions innings for 114 runs in 26.1 overs.

A not so quick 30 minute ‘sit-down’ lunch ensued. Captain Firfire had put on a spread of crisps and cream cakes with cups of tea for the players.

Opening the batting for Town was the emerging player of the season Saad Kayani (23) and Firfire (30). Astonishingly Saad, despite his excellent performances, was not given the opportunities he so truly deserved this year. But his saviour on this occasion was a captain who gave him a platform to flourish. And flourish he did. Some lusty blows really put the Lions on the back foot. On the other end Firfire played with usual circumspect before becoming more expansive as the innings progressed. Together they put on 44 in 10 overs. Puwar (13) came in and took his time to find the pace of the pitch but once in showed glimpses of a very bright future. Vaghela (34*) continued his imperious form at the back end of the season. The stylish left hander hit some beautiful sixes including a six to win the match.

A thoroughly enjoyable match played with great spirit and led with leadership!
