Match report Northwood Town hosted league leaders Markyate CC in a much-anticipated clash over the weekend. Despite a delayed arrival by the visitors, the game began on time, with Town skipper T. Shah winning the toss and choosing to bat first under overcast, humid conditions.


It was a rocky start for the hosts as opener Bijendra fell early, setting the tone for a challenging innings. The top order found it tough to handle Markyate’s disciplined bowling, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Among the top five, only Jay Patel showed notable resistance, crafting a composed innings while chaos unfolded around him. At 6 wickets down, the innings looked in serious trouble until Patrick stepped up with a composed and unbeaten 44. He was well supported by Krunal Puwar (KP), and together they stitched a crucial 50+ run partnership that gave the innings some much-needed stability. Despite their efforts, the lower order couldn’t contribute significantly, and Northwood Town were eventually bowled out for 151.

After the break, Northwood Town came out with renewed energy, eager to defend their modest total. However, Markyate’s openers had other ideas, launching a blistering counterattack. They raced to 70 runs within the first 9 overs, taking full advantage of some erratic bowling by the Town pacers. The introduction of spin brought a few breakthroughs, but by then the damage had been done. Markyate CC comfortably chased down the target in the 29th over, maintaining their unbeaten run and solidifying their position at the top of the table.

“When you're up against the top team, your top five batsmen need to perform and give a solid start – unfortunately, that didn’t happen today. Full credit to Patrick and KP for their partnership, and Jay for his innings. Our bowlers didn’t hit the right areas and things didn’t go according to our plan. We’ll regroup, bounce back stronger next week, and aim to climb back to the top.”
