Match report Northwood Town 3rd XI fell to a 6-wicket defeat against Leverstock Green 3s in their opening match of their Division 10 league campaign.

Batting first on a spongy wicket, openers Ben Rawson-Jones and Jonathan Bentvelzen got Town off to a flyer - with the score racing to 45 in the 5th over. However, a loose shot from Rawson-Jones halted the momentum as he perished for 37 off just 18 balls.

Leverstock Green’s change bowlers used nagging accuracy to pin down Town’s batsmen, with Bentvelzen eventually departing for 14 after soaking up the pressure for an admirable 50 balls.

Wickets began to tumble with alarming regularity, but a determined effort from father and son combo Tanush and Dhaval Shah - with support from Mitesh Parmar - allowed Town to bat out their 40 overs and inch up to 137-9. Dhaval Shah finished with a determined 14 from 48 balls.

In reply, Leverstock Green’s top order came out playing their shots but two early wickets from skipper Ganesh Jambulingam pegged them back. At the other end, Mitesh Parmar blew off the cobwebs to bowl with accuracy but without much luck.

However, an explosive third wicket partnership saw Town’s change bowlers taken apart. A couple of late wickets were claimed but Leverstock charged past the target in just 19.3 overs.

3s skipper Jambulingam said: “This was a tough start to the season with a new look 3s side - but I’m proud of how we knuckled down to bat out our 40 overs. There’s plenty of room for improvement over the coming weeks and I hope the team can all work hard on their games.”
