Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hatfield Hyde CC 1st XI on Sat 16 May 2026 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Town hosted Hatfield Hyde who were coming off a promotion in their previous season. It was overcast and chilly and the pitch was wet and soft. Town Skipper maintaining his consistent record of losing the toss, lost the toss again and were asked to bat. The 2 Rs, Ravi and Rohit going in to bat seemed to be in a hurry, especially Rohit. Started off with his usual classic strokes pushing hard at the ball getting a few boundaries in the 1st couple of vers. Town were 23 in the 3rd over when Rohit, who is never satisfied hitting only 4s, went for a big one and skied one. It only went to short cover where the fielder took a well judged catch. The ball spent more time in the air than Rohit did on the wicket. Deepak walking in to bat, played a beautiful shot to mark his entry and then......EXIT. Thats when Town again started falling like bowling pins. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry. Ravi kept holding one end, playing sensibly, putting the bad balls away nicely to the boundary before he once again got unlucky with one that didnt bounce at all and got bowled.....next time keep your eyes on the ball Rav ;). Skipper didnt even bother troubling the scorers or the umpire as he got bowled 1st ball. Pratick got a start played a couple of nice strokes before he returned to the changing room. Nishant fresh from a nice inings the previous week again showed a gutsy performance and stayed in there long, nicely ticking away singles, tryng to build a partnership but only Keval stayed long enough to give town a glimmer of hope at a decent score. But after the drinks break it all ended very quick giving the oppo a target of 98.
Hatfield batsmen came out ready to finish it soon and started hitting off anything coming their way. Jeet got the bulk of it and then in his effort to try harder gave away quite a few wides. Keval kept his line and length not giving any room to the oppo batsmen and built pressure from one end. Finally the openers trying one shot too many got out one after the other, Keval and Jeet getting the wickets. And then their tails were up, dots after dots, building the pressure up and 2 more quick wickets feel, getting the oppo about 30/4. Scoot and Kasun steadied the ship and played sensibly, respecting the good balls and putting away the bad ones. This is when skipper decided to bring himself on to try and get a breakthrough...the only that broke was the sound barrier as his first ball was smacked towards cow corner for a six. It took Iqbal a couple of overs to find his line and length and from the other end Keval kept the pressure going and finally got a 3rd wicket on what would have been the last ball of his spell.....but he wanted to bowl more. Iqbal started squeezing the runs from the other end and finally managed to get the wicket of the well set hard hitting batsman Kasun. About 60/5 brought hope to town and pratik in to bowl. Immediately Pratik was amongsdt the wicket takers as he got a couple of quick wickets to get the oppo down to 78/8. Scoot holding one end, blocking out both Iqbal and Pratik, pleading to his team mates to just stay at the wicket but no one seemed to be paying attention. At 78/8, needing 20 runs to win, in walks Mohammed Yousuf. He tried to hit the 1st ball from Pratik and missed. Then what came was a flurry of 4s and 6s as Yousaf finished the game in the next 8 balls hitting 2 huge sixes and 2 boundaries ending with 21 off just 8 balls turning Town's dreams of winning into a nightmare.
Well battled out there by the bowlers, really stuck to it and made a game out of it trying to defend a low score. Fielders backed the bowlers up really well, barring a couple of lapses. Batsmen need to take more responsibility and spend more time at the wicket. Remember, its a 50 over game so plenty of time to score runs, just need to put your head down and stay on the wicket for longer periods if Town wants to make an impact this sseason.
