Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Harpenden CC 3rd XI on Sat 27 Jun 2026 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Town hosted Harpenden 3s on what was expected to be a hot day. Town super win the toss and elected to field first as three wicket looked damp and hoped to take advantage of that. Jack amd Sajid were back together for the 1st time since the last season and were back on it from the start. Jack got in the wickets immediately taking 3 wickets and Harpenden were 3 down for no score. Sajid kept it right from the other end and Harpenden were 21 for 3 after the first 10 overs. A double change after drinks saw Keval and Iqbal come in the attack. Keval with his consistent line and length kept the pressure going while Iqbal after beating the bat and missing the stumos quite a few times quickly for a break through and then kept the batsmen struggling. With the ball turning and keeping low it made it really difficult for the batsmen. Iqbal finished his spell with 4 wickets conceding only 8 runs. Deepak was brought in the attack but unlike the last few times (where he always have taken wickets in the first over) couldn't get a back through in the short 2 over spell. At this time Harpenden were 70/7 when skipper got Nischay amd Rohit in the attack. After a few loose balls they got into rhythm and cleaned up the tail with Jack taking an absolutely brilliant sliding one- handed catch. Harpenden ended with 92 in the 35th over.
Town needing 93 and a win to come off lout of the relegation zone, started cautiously. But soon as the wicket was tricky immediately started losing wickets from one end. Ravi got a Good ball that jagged back in piercing the gap between the bat and pad hiring the stumps. Deepak unfortunately got it the first ball and Nischay soon followed. Rohit on the other end seemed like he was playing on another wicket hitting 4s and a huge 6 taking the score ticking. Iqbal didn't trouble the scores and got it quick as well leaving Town Sterling for 40/4. Now it was trying to stay long and blocking the balls to five Rohit enough time to get runs. But Rohit was the next wicket, unfortunately given out LBW even though there was big inside edge onto the pads. Now 93 looked a far way away. But as has happened in the last three lower order showed resistance and kept the scoreboard rocking, slowly but surely. But with no real partnerships Town was still struggling. Karan, Kishan, Nishant all tried to stay as long as possible but with the wicket still playing tricks it made it difficult for them to hold on. A few more wickets Town were 71/9. Keval joined Jack in the middle and tried his best not to get tempted to play his favourite dilscoop. Both of them played sensibly, Keval mostly blocking and Jack getting runs at every opportunity he could. The oppo seemed kept making changes to try and break the partnership but Jack and Kev had decided that they will bring it home. Slowly the score kept creeping up to where it was 88/9. This is when the oppo bright in their opening bowler back to try to go his magic. With Keval on strike he was aiming straight at the stumps top either hit the stumps or the pads hoping to get an LBW. But with trying to bowl straight there is always a chance to stay down the leg side, which is exactly what happened. He bowled to straight trying to get a faster one in, went down the leg side for 5 wides and ended the nail biting in the dressing room. Town win by 1 wicket in what was a today turvy game where either side could have won. Fantastic game of cricket, but for Town they had only themselves to blame for making it difficult and taking it down to the wire. Time and time again the varying has shown how fragile it is, especially under pressure. The seniors need to take more responisbility and spend more time in the middle but then everyone knows that but that is not good enough.
2 nail boring finishes in the last 2 games saw Town jump to 5 in the table. One game in this round remaing, Town hopes to finish it strong and start the next round with more confidence and wins under the belt.
