Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Northampton Exiles II on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 1:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets.

Match report On a glorious sunny day where temperatures were set for 28C, town's 2nd XI were happy to be back home after a visit to a marsh field last week and the pitch looked absolute belter, oozing runs with a fast & quick outfield. Town lost the toss and as expected, Exiles chose to bat 1st.

New ball was shared between Brahmbhatt and Mapara and both found their line lengths pretty soon specially Brahmbhatt, who was hitting decent lengths and started his variations and was soon rewarded with a wicket when he trapped Chakarwati in front of the stumps with a beautiful deliver that came in after setting him up with out going deliveries. Brahambhatt got Exiles no 3 out in his next over caught behind the wicket and Exiles who started with buoyant intent suddenly went into consolidation mode. At the first drinks break, Exiles were 52/2 in 15 overs.

Double bowling change was introduced in the form of Avadhani & Anjum and both bowled really tight lines without giving anything away and Anjum in his 2nd over ended the painful resistance of Exiles No 4. The Anjum/Avadhani show continued for the next 15 overs, strangling the Exiles run rate and made the game bit boring for the balcony but thankfully the other mini show that was going on between Kotecha and Mapara, kept the nearby fielders entertained. At the 2nd drinks break, Exiles were 90/3 in 30 overs.

Final phase of Exiles innings, having wickets in hands, town expected them to come hard and put some runs on the board. Naik who was hanging around patiently started to cut and nudge anything outside line. Another change in bowling got Janardhan & Gordhandas into the attack and Janardhan straight away broke the partnership by removing both of them caught deep midwicket by Ramawat and Carrigan who took a beautiful catch and was very effective in the field. Exiles tried to keep the tempo and lost wickets at regular intervals, ended up getting 193/8 in 45 overs. A score town felt was at least 50 runs short and expected an easy run chase.

After a short & sweet tea break, keeping Champions League kick-off in mind, town started their chase. Gairola, in his typical fashion, smashed 4 boundaries in the first over but got out caught at square leg to a controversial catch. Kotecha joined skipper Ramawat in the middle and they started to rebuild the innings with a cautious approach. At the first drinks break, town were 70/1 in 15 overs. After the break when things looked settled, Ramawat got out caught behind the stumps trying to run the ball past keeper. Pandey joined Kotecha in the middle and played some lovely shots before getting out trying to keep the tempo up leaving scoreline 105/3 in 23 overs. Town were still relaxed as they knew they were batting very deep. Brahambhatt joined Kotecha in the middle and looked solid before getting out to a ball that came in sharply and hit his bat/pad and then rolled onto the stumps and Kotecha followed him shortly trying to up the run rate leaving scoreline 130/5 in 30 overs at the 2nd drinks break.

Still needing 60 odd runs, town were confident given the remaining names that were to come and bat. Janardhan and Carriger in the middle to see town over the line in the last phase of the game. Janardhan, true to his recent form creamed some of the best back foot cover drives, even Virat Kohli would be proud of. Janardhan kept playing his shots every time the ball was in his zone but soon got out trying to loft over midwicket. Carrier also followed in the next over leaving a nervous dressing room and scoreline 158/7 in 36 overs. Still needing 35 to win in 9 overs. Anjum, cool as cucumber took his time but ensure town crossed the line with 4 overs to spare with some fine stroke play, specially the six straight over the bowler to finish the game, ably supported by Gordhandas on the other end.

A game that should have been won comfortably, was closed with a bit of nerves. Some lessons to be learned for the town batsmen on ensuring a tempo is maintained to not to put undue pressure on middle/lower order but none the less, a fantastic win to beat Exiles to retain no 3 spot in the division.

Skipper believes that after few games, the new guys have integrated really well and team spirits are high, some more work to be done but overall we are on the correct path.

Onwards & Upwards!
