Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Knebworth Park III on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 1:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 149 runs.
Match report
It was always the case of David vs Goliath when Knebworth Park III travelled to Northwood to take on Northwood Town II. Town II, were looking to solidify their position in the table, which would then enable them to move up in the later stages of the league, if results go their way. Knebworth Park though on the other hand, were looking for their first win of the season. It was a lovely afternoon, 24 degrees forecasted for the days high, and a fresh pitch that was baked in the sun for two days – a no brainer for a bat first day. Knebworth park skipper though, thought differently and put Town in.
A reshuffled batting order meant that Janardhanan got a promotion to open the innings along with skipper Ramawat. Intent was positive from both the batsmen from the word go. Town II raced to 50 before 10 overs were completed. Janardhanan was putting away all the loose balls that were presented. He brought up his 50 in the 13th over and by drinks in 15th Town were 81 for no loss. The trend continued with Ramawat then picking up from the other side, two wonderful cuts resulted in boundaries in the same over. Janardhanan was also looking solid in the other side as Town II produced their first 100 runs partnership for the first season. Running between the wickets though, was not as great as one would have liked and some immature mix up cost Town 2 wickets, first the Skipper for 40 and then Janardhanan, who fell painfully short of his first century by 5 runs. Two wickets in the span of 6 runs brought Ravi Kotecha and Pradeep Pandey together, who started to rebuild the innings once again. Kotecha and Pandey were watchful in at the start, but Towns run rate never dipped below 5. Come over no 37, skipper challenged Kotecha who was at the time 31, to get a century from that stage and he can forget about paying the match levies for the rest of the season. Money, of course can do wonderful things – Kotecha accepted the challenge with both hands as he plundered the bowling around the park to propel town to 274. Last 10 overs produced 90 runs, with Kotecha being not out in the end at 86. Pandey also played a nice hand in the innings, falling in the last over for 38.
As is the case with Northwood Towns home matches, the teas were wonderful and Knebworth Park started the stiff chase. Malik and Nishil found their lengths right away. First blood was drawn when Malik had one nip away from the pitch, Knebworth Park opener nicking one to a sharp catch in the second slip by skipper Ramawat. Malik, then cleaned up two more of the batsmen, leaving the chase 26 for 3 in 10 overs. Nishil then got his share of the wickets by cleaning up No 4,5 & 6. The chase now reeling at 32 for 6, was all but over. Double bowling change brought Khetia and Syed to finish off the innings, but then there was from rear end resistance from Knebworth Park’s No 9, Catherine, who drove and cut with authority. She made it to 40, but it was too little too late for park, as Raj Kotecha and Deepak Gariola claiming one wicket each to finish the innings off and giving Town a thumping victory by 149 runs.
It was refreshing to see Park fielding 3 women, and they were up to the task, affecting two run outs and the rear guard action in the 2nd innings. Town, had a very good day in the park with close to a complete performance. There are things to work on for them, if they have to finish at the top, especially running between the wickets and finishing of the tail quickly. They however do have the potential and resources to do it as they get better and better each week.
