Knebworth Park III v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 24 Aug 2019 at 1:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets.
Match report
Summer finally arrived with temperatures set to cross 30C, town travelled to beautiful & scenic old Knebworth Park to play Knreborth Park 3rd XI. Town won the toss and decided to test their fielders stamina and chose to field first in baking hot conditions.
New ball was shared with Malik and Mapara. Malik was on the money from his 1st delivery and got the breakthrough in his 2nd over when Wheeler ballooned a catch to Patel at mid-off but runs kept leaking from the other end with the help of quick outfield and slope on one side. At the end of 10 overs KP were 40/1. Bowling change got Anjum and Patel into the attach and run scoring slowed down from both the ends now. The pitch was quite flat and it was clear that anything full or short with pace on it had boundary written all over it. On the other hand both KP batsmen offered nothing and kept playing the game that England test team was desperately missing and would have been proud of. At the end of the 20th over, KP were 70/1. Another bowling change was made and Gordhandas was into the attach with Pandey. KP's batsmen now set started to attack and added another 45 runs in the next 6 overs. Town desperate for the wicket got their main bowler into the attach and Malik got both the set batsmen out in his return over. A big relief for the town as KP were 130/3 in 30 overs.
Stage was set for KP to put a big total on the scoreboard and that is what they tried to do but lost another couple of wickets in quick succession to Pandey's gentle pies making scoreline 139/5 in 34 overs. KP's no 7 and 8 started to rebuild the innings and took their time before started making use of some loose deliveries which were plenty on offer this day. In the end KP posted an impressive total of 213/7 in their 45 overs. Town were disappointed with their bowling effort specially with the extras as they conceded 25 of them. Despite their disappointment, they knew that the pitch was good and all they had to do was to play their full overs and runs would follow.
After a good tea, town openers Gairola and Pandey started the run chase but were jolted in the 1st over when Gairola was given out leg before. Kotecha reluctently joined Pandey in middle and the idea was quite simple, stay on the crease and runs would flow. Together they tried to do that and odd boundries came by. Unfortunate for town but just when Kotecha was looking like settled after the initial nerves, he got cleaned-up leaving town scoreline 26/2 in 7 overs. Ever reliable Anjum walked in with calmness and resolution, started to rebuild the innings with Pandey who was also looking very solid from the other end. Together they kept the scorecard ticking until Pandey who received a seaming full delivery, posing a question to his famous 'Knees' which had no answer and his castle was on the floor, leaving a sinking scorecard 40/3 in 14 overs.
In Patel and he started to play his natural game with straight bat and runs started to come thick and fast. Anything short was pulled or cut with disdain and if full, driven hard back to the boundary. Patel infused life into the chase with his fireworks all across the pitch while the giant was sleeping on the other end just nudging and trudging. In the next 6 overs, town (mainly Patel) collected 60 runs at an average of 10 RPO. But as they say, fireworks only last so much, Patel got out to the keeper trying to whip a full delivery but ended up with a faint nick to the keeper but not before giving a lifeline to the scoreboard, 100/4 in 20 overs.
Walks in Palan, playing his 1st game for the 2s this season with some nerves with sleeping giant on the other end who was on 15 only having already spent 14 overs in the middle. That was the time when 'Anjum show' started. Picked up from where Patel left, Anjum started punishing every single loose delivery with absolute control and precision. The odd good deliveries were given respect and punishment was served for the ones that erred while Palan played a rock solid from other end. Together they added 70 runs in the next 10 overs taking town total to 170/4 in 30 overs providing massive relief to the audience on the fence.
Anjum was calm and composed and looked resolute to bring town 30 points and pull them out of a very difficult position that they were in and this is what he did with the help of Palan. The Anjum show carried on and they both got town across the line in the 39th over without loosing any further wickets with a match winning partnership of 115* runs.
It was a fantastic win architectured by Anjum with his solid innings with good support from Patel and Palan. This win again showcased why town are amongst the top of the league with the depth in their bowling and batting lineup. A proud moment for the team and we collect another 30 points. We move on.
