Stoke Newington Cricket Club v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 27 Apr 2019 at 1:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost 113 runs.

Match report Following a very kind gesture by Stoke Newington Cricket Club to host a friendly after a late request from the Town 2 nd XI, the 2s valiantly made the 1hr 15min journey across town. Greeted by the
effervescently friendly faces of the opposition, the 2s, with a man down, were rearing to go in the unholy gusts of Storm Hannah. Having lost the toss, skipper Shahmir Syed and his team were put in to bowl first. With only 10 men, the challenge was clear but there was determination in the eyes of the 2s and every man was ready to put in 110% to make up for the reduced numbers. The message from the skipper was clear, ‘forget the score, you have 2 objectives, get match fit and… ENJOY!’. Skipper Syed opened the charge along with pace partner, Sajid Malik, at the other end. After a few wides in the first over, Syed eventually got going and was quickly rewarded with the wicket of the opposition skipper with a yorker clearing the middle stumps. But it was from here onwards that the batsmen on the other end, Krunesh, began his aggressive charge and began taking the game away from Town. With regular bowling changes eventually amounting to 8 of the 10 players getting a bowl, Town were rewarded with wickets at regular intervals including bowling debutant Sukhi picking up 2 wickets which included the dangerous Krunesh (69). It was also a proud occasion for Town’s Viral Patel who was playing alongside his son and Town colt, Jay, who bowled with excellent guile and produced an economical spell.

In the end the man down was too much for Town as they conceded 252 runs in the 40 overs which included a late charge by Haroon (68). Following a fantastic set of teas from the opposition, the skipper asked his batsmen to forget the score and focus on playing their game. This resonated well with the Town’s openers with Harish Janardan scoring an excellently paced 51 supported by Deepak (11) and Jonathan Bentvelzen (29). At the 15 over mark, Town were 85-2 and there was this sense of belief that at this rate a win was visible. But alas, it was shortlived as the 2s succumbed to a collapse and ended at 139.

Result aside, this was a fantastic friendly game which was played in the true spirit of cricket. Both sides got along very well on and off the field and they look forward to meeting again for the same fixture next season.
