Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Weston on Sat 12 Sep 2020 at 12:00 pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets.

Match report Despite a loss last week, Town 2nd XI sat at the top of the table and needed to win this game to ensure they win the division 7A and champion the league twice in a row. Town were focused and pumped-up on a sunny day with a fast outfield and pitch that looked fairer than fair, oozing lots of runs. Unfortunately town lost the toss and were asked to field first.

In the absence of Patel, Mapara shared the new ball with Malik and both bowled really well but it was Mapara who got the early breakthrough when he got Sr Snowdon bowled through the gates. Malik bowled superbely from the other end and kept the confident looking Jr Snowdown on breaks. At the end of the  1st 10 overs, Weston were 27/1. A double bowling change was introduced and Madhavan along with Syed were into the attack. Syed although went for a few runs but broke the 2nd wicket partnership which was looking threatening. Madhavan on the other hand bowled beautifully to keep the Jr Snowdon quiet as he was well set and was desperate to get going which Madhavan never allowed. At the end of 20 overs, Weson were 80/2 looking solid and set to launch from there.

Anjum who replaced Syed, kept the plugs tight with his accuracy, together with Madhavan they only gave away 30 runs in the next 10 overs, putting the pressure right back onto Weston to score some runs. Madhawan finished his full spell but was unlucky to not have picked any wickets. Aggarwal bowling for the 1s time for the 2s ran through the Weston line-up like kegels  and destroyed any hopes they had to post a decent total on a track that was full of runs. Weston went from 128/2 in 28 overs to 160/6 in the next 10 overs. Malik and Halai shared a wicket each towards the end of the Weston innings, keeping Weston down to 169/9 in 40 overs. A fantastic bowling effort by Malik, Madhawan and Aggarwal, given the conditions that were suited for batting.

Town were very pleased with their effort in the field to give themselves a target of 170 on a deck that was full of runs. A short break and Town were down to the business. Gairola and Halai started the chase and Gairola wasted no time in punishing Weston's new ball attack. Gairola was determined to make amends from last Saturday's game and looked focused to give town a quick and solid start. Halai tried to hold the other end but Town lost their 1st wicket in the form of Halai in the 9th over but not before laying a good foundation of 58 runs. Gairola who looked in murderous form so far was very unlucky to get out, leaving scoreline 66/2 in 11 overs.

Skipper Ramawat along with another senior, Anjum were in the middle and both were determined to carry on from the solid foundation and ensured the initiative was not lost. Together they steadied the ship and added another valuable 40 runs before Ramawat got out, leaving the scoreline 107/3 in 17 overs. Still needing 63 runs, Aggarwal joined Anjum who was well set and together they ensured Town reached the target without any further fuss. Anjum played a mature innings to ensure Town got the win and Aggarwal played a quick fiery innings to bring the target home in the 27th over.

In the end it looked all easy. Town were the champions of Division 7A. A must win game and they delivered the goods without flexing too much muscles as they have done it for a few years.

At the end of the game, skipper Ramawat spoke - "It has been an anomalous year where a lot was different, except the spirit and passion to play the game we all love. We were determined & focused as a unit to achieve our objective, and although there were few blips on our way, we did accomplish what we set out to achieve and I am very proud of each one of you. Take a bow! This is a champion team, full of champions. It has taken a lot of hard work over the years to be where we are and we all should be proud of what we have got going here."

We have got a tough winter ahead of us and we all hope next year brings some normality into our lives. Until we get together again next year, look after yourself & your loved ones. Keep going, keep moving...
