Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v St Margaretsbury II on Sat 01 Jul 2023 at 13:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won 33 runs
Match report
On an overcast morning with sun to come, Town turned to their home ground and performed some fielding drills, preparing to receive second in the table visitors St.Margaretsbury. Having won the toss, Town elected to bat with Tushar Shah and Bijendra Vaghela opening the batting. Tushar off the back of a well scored 100 against Old Cholmeleians was especially eager to start and Town kicked off. The openers started the run scoring very quickly with Town reaching 60 runs within 7 overs before their first wicket fell as Bijendra was caught out. Ravi came in at 3 and stabilized the innings as Town continued to tick and rotated the strike well before Tushar was soon bowled trying to go over the top. Coming in at 4 and partnering Ravi for the majority of the innings was Keeran, who together took a while to get adjusted to the unpredictable pitch with deliveries on good lengths that were bouncing above the batter's bat and deliveries that were short but kept low. After slowing the run rate down slightly and finally getting into the nick of things, Ravi and Keeran started rotating the strike well, hitting 4 boundaries each and keeping Town floating as they carried the total to 130 in 30 overs. Town from there looked to accelerate with a surplus of batsmen to come, and from there, wickets slowly trickled as Town's batsmen came in, hitting their shots and allowing the team to reach a score of 176 in 40 overs. Maybe a slight bit short of what we should have achieved but a good score nonetheless that will take some chasing to reach.
A quick tea break and Town headed out to bowl with Hiren and Sajid taking the new ball. Both bowlers started off really well and kept the runs tight as they restricted the opposition to just 33 runs in the first 101 overs and Hiren taking a wicket in the 7th over, providing an early breakthrough for Town. Having seen the pitch when they were batting, Town introduced their spinners with Ben Rawson Jones making his much anticipated return to the team as well as Akshar Pastel's debut. Ben and KP's spin partnership saw Town control the run rate with St.Margaretsbury staying just in reach of the required rate, with their number 3 carrying their innings. Town battled on and the introduction of Amit and Ibbad saw the wickets start to fall and the asking rate climb, with Amit and Ibbad bowling in a 7 wicket partnership. Ibbad's late flurry of wickets and Amit's loopy spin as well as the required run rate increasing saw Amit pick up a well deserved fifer, carrying the Town home as they won the game by 33 runs. The highlight of the game certainly was Ibbad Kayani, who eagerly came in to silly mid-off in a catching position for the last delivery to dismiss the final batsman and take all the wickets as well as helping Amit to his 6 wicket haul. Instead, Ibbad saw fit to drop an absolute dolly, diving unneccassarily to his left and over-exaggerating what can only be described as a simple catch. A fine to Ibbad and a fantastic win for Town, upsetting the number 2 side in the league with a great victory and maintaining Town's 3 game win streak.
