Northwood Town Cricket Club Sunday XI v Kensington & Chelsea CC on Sun 14 May 2023 at 1:00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won MOTM: Ganesh with a Fifer!
Match report
Turning up on a sunny Sunday afternoon at home, Town prepared the back field to play on the astro turf, and after having done the toss, Town won the toss and elected to bat first. Opening the batting for NTCC was Sam and Keeran and they both started the innings off positively, running very hard between the wickets and forving multiple fielding errors which led to plenty of runs. Both batsman but Keeran especially was struggling to adapt to the astro turf and get solid bat on ball and as such, Keeran soon fell for 5, trying to pull a ball and ultimately paddling it straight to backward square leg. Sam continued to bat with Harry coming in at 3 but Harry was soon dismissed on an LBW, bringing Amit into the fray. Amit came in and started to pick the pace up and that's when Sam fell to a good delivery chipping it and getting caught. Thinooach and Amit played together for a while with Thinooach hitting a good shot and dumping the spinner over Cow corner for 4 before getting bowled through the gate by a fantastic leg spinner from the oppo's bowler, Piyush. Town's wickets continued to tumble till Mairaj, Stanley and Ibbad, who all had some solid partnerships with each other and put together some decent runs on the board with Stanley scoring 12, Mairaj hitting 19 and Ibbad playing hard for a well earned 22. With only 10 players on the day, wickets fell to our final pair, made up of Ganesh and Saad and both continued to run well and keep the scoreboard ticking to 151, giving Town an ample score to defend.
A quick tea break and Town headed out to defend their score of 151 with Ibbad and Stanley opening the bowling with a brand new ball. Ibbad and Stanley bowled well but the opposition's openers were both fantastic batsmen, playing elegant straight and over drives and running extremely well, pushing our fielders and our bowlers to the limits. The opposition's openers gave them a fantastic start of 59 - 0 in 6 overs (a reminder they were chasing 151 in 40!) and so Town switched the pace of the game from pace which clearly looked a losing battle to spin in the form of Mairaj and Ganesh. Both spinners bowled fantastic lines and after an expensive initial over for Mairaj (slog swept for six), one of the oppo's openers made a mistake when trying to take Mairaj on and ended up skying the ball to Stanley at mid-off, who took a fantastic catch to break the opening partnership. Ganesh on the other end kept his lines tight and he took out the other opening batsman with a catch in gully by Keeran. Mairaj and Ganesh's strict bowling lines and tight fielding from the team really suffocated the opposition and the opponent really felt the squeeze, eventually giving way in the form of wickets. Both Mairaj and Ganesh finished their spell together with 8 wickets between them, a fantastic bowling performance and a brilliant fifer for Ganesh! Having finished their bowling spells, Amit and Saad came in to replace the previous two spinners to finish things off and Amit took out the final 2 batsmen, giving Town a reall well earned win.
After the first 6 overs, with the opposition 59 for no loss after 6 overs to 108 all out, Town really worked well for the win and the bowlers really deserved that performance.
A great result for all, positives in our bowling and fielding and a few things to work on with our batting but great work all round from the boys and a great win. Man of the match, Ganesh, for being the game changer and taking 5 wickets to put the game to bed!
