Redbourn II v Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 11 May 2024 at 12:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost 80 runs

Match report NTCC First XI met Rebourn CC 2s on a (rare) gorgeous day away from home. New captain Madhavan, put his old codgers through their paces as he conducted the first warm ups the first xi have seen since gravity was first discovered. Having lost the toss, Redbourn elected to bat first and were initially stifled by new opening bowlers Madhavan and Malik who bowled tight lines and lengths restricting Redbourn to just under 30 in the first 10 overs. However, the redbourn openers, found form and cracked runs at ease reaching 80 odd for no loss after 16 overs. Shortly after the first drinks break, NTCC 1s debutant Ibbad Kayani found his first wicket and went on to bowl with great pace. This innings could be described as one that ebbed and flowed with NTCC having good spells and the opposition often biting back and having great moments of their own. Another 1S debutant Karan Rajani got his first wicket and celebrated like a prime Dale Steyn. He could describe himself a little unlucky to have not got more overs by the skipper. Iqbal Anjum as usual bowled beautifully and with precision as he continues the hunt for another award in his mantel piece. Krunal Patel was easily a standout performer with the ball, as he bowled with great flight and drift, looking ever threatening. However, the 1s got to witness a super rare event, even rarer than the northern lights; Veer Vadgama dropping two catches and going for over 7 runs an over for possibly the very first time in his illustrious NTCC career. Just as we witnessed one rarity, we also witnessed another, this was Akshay Loomba's outstanding day as wicketkeeper. It wouldn't be an underestimation to believe he might be on the plane to the West Indies in over a month to be India's first choice wicket keeper. In the end, Redbourn ended with 227, which was described as a par score on an absolute belter of a pitch.

For NTCC's response, out strode NTCC'S very own MS Dhoni and Mikhil Patel. Akshay played some trademark cuts and drives looking solid before playing all round to a straight one and was adjudged plumb in front. Next gone was Mikhil Patel, who was also adjudged LBW, one too many moves on the dance floor the night before proving costly. Then went Veer for a globe, as his day went from bad to worse, however it must be said, the catch to dismiss him was described as one of the best at our level of cricket. When skipper Madhavan came out Town were tottering, and when he was joined by yet another debutant Humayun Wassim, hopes seemed to be back, only before Wassim leading edged one to short cover. Then came Iqbal Anjum, who put on a great partnership with Madhavan, but alas, Anjum decided to place his dinner order in the middle of a ball, and was adjudged LBW as a result of being frozen at the crease. Then Skipper Madhavan bringing out the old duster, went having played a weak sweep shot to a ball pitching comfortably outside leg. The procession of wickets continued as club legend Andy Burt, skied a rank full toss to long on, Krunal patel also getting caught at long on having hit a couple of lusty 6s and Sajid Malik having also being caught out in what can be described as another worldie catch. However saving NTCC from total humiliation were the pair of newbies and gym bros Karan Rajani and Ibbad Kayani. They played some beautiful shots and crafted a very gritty and much needed partnership, showing the top order how to bat on an absolute motorway of a pitch. Ibbad showing his class with the bat launching some lusty 6s and well crafted 4s. At last Redbourn put an end to the rear guard action and got rid of Ibbad, leaving Karan Rajani with his sought after red dot. In the end NTCC fell well short and lost the game by 80 runs earning 13 points.

At the end of the game skipper Madhavan was asked about the game, his response was: First game as captain of this wonderful club, didn't go to plan. We bowled relatively well but once again conceded too many runs in the death and didn't quite field well enough either. Our batting has been an issue in the past and it was certainly where the game was lost today. However, happy with the team spirit and happy with the contribution of the debutants. With team spirit high, we will need to buck up on our technical skills and we can be a tough match for anybody in the league. All in all, first match out of the way, we will be back and I hope to god we will be better.
