Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Wheathampstead on Sat 18 May 2024 at 12:00 PM
Northwood Town Cricket Club Won By 52 runs
Match report
On an overcast morning, Town welcomed Wheathampstead CC for their first home league game. Town were certainly hurting from last week's game, but were determined to turn things around on what can only be described as a barely playable pitch. Wheathamstead won the toss and chose to bowl; what can be described as the biggest no brainer of the year. Starting the innings was 1s returnee Rahul Aggarwal and 1s veteran Akshay loomba. Rahul played some trademark aggressive shots and played almost like he was in the middle of an IPL game and not the dirt swamp Town were playing on. Akshay shortly departed for a solitary run, but having played a significant role in blunting the new ball. Then in typical NTCC fashion, there was a small collapse resulting in V Vadgama, N Madhavan and H Wassim departing for single figure scores. Rahul also departed, but not before top scoring with a fluent 39 that would be crucial in the result. Town's lower order though proved once again that there was a legitimate case to reverse the order. I Anjum playing a gritty innings finishing on 20, M Patel playing aggressively for his 22 and K Patel in typical fashion scoring a quick 17. All in all, the talk was about 150 being a great score, and we surpassed that to eventually end up on 160 thanks to some very important knocks right through the order.
In response, the sun had come out and the Wheathampstead openers begun in aggressive fashion putting runs on the board and reducing the deficit with ease. However, V Vadgama struck soon after, bowling the opposition skipper round his legs, much to his bafflement. As the overs ticked along, Wheathampstead were once again building a dangerous partnership, but that was also ended when S Malik came on and immediately struck with this first ball to put an end to an innings that was threatening to take the game away. After this Town struck regularly through the absolute quality spells of I Anjum and K Patel. Anjum's deliveries spun so much, that the batsmen and the ball were on different planets and Anjum;s spell was absolutely un playable. Shortly after this, Wheathampstead once again built a partnership through the middle threatening to take the game away, but V Vadgama coming back for his second spell bowled beautifully with great experience of the NTCC swamp and his spell completely broke the back of the chase. In the end, K Rajani, also struck twice in 8 balls to end the game. Its worth noting, Rajani's league batting average is infinity and he has 3 wickets in just 32 balls bowled. in the end, town comfortably winning "by many" in the famous words of ex NTCC skipper Krunal Patel.
At the end of the game skipper Madhavan was asked about the game: Great to get the first win as skipper, hopefully its one of many. Thought we bowled and batted better than last week and showed clear improvements in every facet. Oppo were good and proved to be a difficult hurdle, but pleased with how we stuck at it and let the skill do all the talking. A shoutout to V Vadgama and I Anjum, their contributions being the clear difference between the two teams. Happy about the result and would expect the same from the team for next week under returning skipper A loomba. #intensity
