Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Mill Hill Village CC 1st XI on Sat 08 Aug 2026 at 12:00
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 25 runs
Match report
Town hosting Mill Hill wanted to get back at their opposition for the thrashing they got when playing at MillHill village. Town was missing 4/5 of their regular players but had good reinforcements in to replace them. 1st XI delivered a disciplined and clinical performance with the ball in the first innings, bowling out the opposition for 148 in 46.2 overs.
Vishal and Pratik led the bowling attack for Town. After a shaky first 2 balls conceding 11 off them, all wides, Vishal settled in nicely and bowled vrilliantly for the remainder of spell. Luck wasnt on his side as he missed the edge on a few occasions and also 3 dropped catches off his bowling. Pratik from the other end settled in nicely bowling an immaculate line and length and got an early breakthrough of the dangerous big hitting batsman Sumit. Keval and Aashir continued to trouble the opposition batsmen being very economical and taking wickets at regular intervals. The highlight of the innings was an exceptional spell from Iqbal, who dominated the middle and lower order with relentless accuracy. Anjum ripped through the lineup to finish with phenomenal figures of 5 for 12 from his 10 overs, including 6 maidens, at an astonishing economy rate of 1.20 runs per over. He received excellent support across the bowling unit, with Keval Shah claiming 2 for 12 off 5.2 overs and Aashir Rifat taking 2 for 26 off 7 overs, while tight spells from Rohit Bahl (0 for 14 off 7 overs) and Priyan Ghoyal (0 for 18 off 6 overs) kept the run rate strictly under control throughout the innings.
The opposition batters struggled to find momentum against Northwood's disciplined attack. Nir Shah top-scored for the side with a patient 27 off 62 balls before falling caught to give Anjum one of his five scalps. Sunny Raval provided some resistance at the top of the order with a gritty 22 off 57 balls before being trapped LBW by Rifat, while Marcus Cara added a quickfire 13. However, the opposition's total was heavily boosted by 45 extras—including 23 wides and 15 byes—which ended up being the highest scoring contribution of the innings. With the opposition dismissed for 148, Northwood Town set themselves up with a manageable target heading into their run chase.
In response to Mill Hill Village’s first-innings total of 148, Northwood Town Cricket Club’s Saturday 1st XI fell short in their chase, being bowled out for 123 in 34.1 overs. Despite setting themselves a manageable target, Northwood Town struggled to build meaningful partnerships against a disciplined Mill Hill Village attack.
Rohit Bahl led the reply with a fluent 25 off 24 balls, striking five boundaries at the top of the order. Rudra Shah added stability with a patient 18 off 49 balls, while Iqbal Anjum (16 off 24 balls), Pratik Patel (15 off 13 balls), and Vishal Barad (11 off 15 balls) all made double-figure contributions in the middle order. However, Northwood Town continued to lose wickets at crucial intervals, preventing any sustained momentum during the chase.
Mill Hill Village’s bowling effort was spearheaded by Obaid Ur Rehman, who delivered a standout spell of 3 for 22 from his 10 overs, including 1 maiden. He received strong support from Sam Smith (2 for 17 off 5.1 overs), David Overton (2 for 23 off 7 overs), and Nir Shah (2 for 22 off 3 overs), while Thomas Smith picked up 1 for 28. Aashir Rifat remained unbeaten on 3 as Northwood Town’s final wicket fell in the 35th over, sealing a 25-run win for Mill Hill Village.
It was disapponting loss for Town. The batsmen once again struggled to maintain a decent run rate piling on pressure and getting out to reckless shorts. This has happened time and again where it was Towns game to lose and we lost. Batsmen need to take more responsibilty, especially the senior ones. They need to play longer and if it means compromising on their normal style so should it be for the greater good of the team. The non-availability of regulars also did not help. Town would have benefitted greatly with them being in the middle order. But it comes down to the players in the middle showing more responsibility as said earlier. Time and time again the batting has shown that they can fall like dominoes which needs to change by displaying more temperament, sensible shot selection and taking more responisibility.
